Three questions regarding Knopp Myth

1. How can I boot a VNC Server on startup or some type of system that will allow me to access a shell from another computer.

2. How do I import something onto the KnoppMyth system from a Windows Computer? I tried to understand Samba but I can't seem to get it working. If I type in \\mythtv from my run line on my Windows machine I can access the "Myth" folder but not the actual system folders. And when I put a file into the Myth folder, in the sub-folder, music, it didn't show up on MythTV.

3. Once I have my music imported from my windows machine, where do I put them so that MythTV recognizes them

Thanks so much for your help, everyone.

if your accessing a shell from windows.. you want "putty". If your accessing it from linux just use "ssh"

if you put music or video in the /myth/video or /myth/music you need to Scan for them.. scan for music.. or scan for video.. both are under setup.. it will scan the correct directory and add any music/video in the folder.

all media goes in the sub directories of /myth

I did manage to find the files using MythTV, but where are they located on the actual computer? I can't seem to find them through the shell.

1. You can put vncserver in /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps (just gogle on how to format it so it is entered right). However, on mine I just use putty (from a windows box) or ssh (from linux). If I need to access the gui (for mythtv-setup, etc) then I ssh into it and run vncserver and then you can vnc into it. That way vnc isn't running all the time.

2. (Since 2 and 3 go together I'll see if I can help). I really shouldn't answer 3 because if you read the install information (at the bottom of manual install) it will show you the file structure. After you connect into your myth box you want /myth/music. If you copy it down from windows to myth you can verify it by ssh into myth and cd /myth/music and then ls nameofsong.mp3 If it is there and doesn't show up in myth then re-run the "Search for music".

I have another two questions:

Is it safe to change the hostname of the system during KnoppMyth install from MythTV to something less easy to grab at? Or, is there a way to do this once the machine has been setup?

Also, where is the web site when you type in http://hostname that allows you at access MythWeb. I'd like to change it and customize it a bit but I'm having trouble locating it.

Finally, is there a way to password protect the system from Windows Networking? On my Windows system I can run \\mythtv and it'll allow me access to the myth folder, which is all great, but anyone could add files to it. If there is a way to request a password when the folder is accessed I greatly appreciate it. On the same note, I wish I could do the same for the MythTV folder also shared by the linux system, although it has NO Write capability, only read. This way, if I had the password, I can drop files nearly anywhere on the system I want.

Thanks so much!

by defualt samba on knoppmyth is password protected .. once you use the password in windows.. windows saves the password for x number of minutes or logout/reboot.

I wouldn't recommend change the hostname after installing. This may have undesired consequences with MythTV.

Having done this during a hardware upgrade and cloning of the old systems DB, I'll say it's definitely an "exercise for the advanced student". I had to do some moderately hairy stuff to get it all straightened out, the settings table in particular required some nasty SQL hackage... Not recommended if you don't have a full DB backup or two, a whole weekend to waste if things go all pear shaped, and a high comfort level with ad hoc shell and SQL coding.
