My mpeg-2 files don't appear to have the subtitles / closed-capation info. I've search various forums & Wikis without succss. I would appreciate any assistance / pointers anyone can provide on setting things up so that the subtitles / closed caption data is captured at the time the episode is recorded.
I did try to enable CC using
ivtvctl --set-vbi=cc --set-vbi-embed=1 --device=/dev/video
Unfortunately, I get the following messages:
ioctl: IVTV_IOS_S_VBI_MODE
ioctl: IVTV_IOS_S_VBI_MODE failed
ioctl: IVTV_IOS_S_VBI_EMBED
ioctl: IVTV_IOS_S_VBI_EMBED failed
I've also updated the FW & Drivers for the 250 card to the latest "production" versions -- I have not tried the beta versions.
Alas, no succees.
Config data
P3-500
Hauppauge pvr-250 capture card
Capture stream type "mpeg-2 PS"
Capture resoluton: 352x480
384MB RAM
I am testing playback using a dlink DSM-320 media box. I do see Closed Caption titles when playing back mpeg2 files recorded with BeyondTV, so I believe that the problem is during the recording of the mpeg2 file, no during playback.
Thanks again for any help you can provide!
Marc

well you need to be more specific about the version of ivtv, as knoppmyth ships with the latest "production" version of ivtv then there's the 0.2 series RC, and the 0.3 beta. The version that knoppmyth ships with does not have vbi support.

Thank you for replying -- good point. I am using the version of IVTV that was bundled with the Knoppmyth distribution I downloaded in early Jan. What I updated was the Hauppauge 250 firmware & driver found at "http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=FirmwareVersions". Specifically, I installed:
pvr_1.18.21.22168_inf.zip***
Decoder CRC =305dba74bbe5905447add8883f3ecb68
Encoder CRC = 6e2012d919fa48811c27e25e54a0a5dc
In reality the decoder CRC was no different than what came with the Knoppmyth distribution I had installed, but the encoder CRC was more recent, and my problem appears to be on the encoding side. I was also seeing some video glitches at that time that I was trying to solve, but that's fixed now.
From your message it looks like I need to install version 0.2 of IVTV. I've located a download for the zip file. Looks like I need to compile it -- I haven't done any builds with this system, but it looks like gcc was in the distribution so I'll give it a shot.
Is it sufficient to simply copy the final "ivtvctl" image to "/usr/local/bin" after the build is done?
Thanks for all the help!

If I'm not mistaken the make install should put everything in place for you. At any rate there are several threads on the board about how to compile a newer ivtv version.
And yes I can confirm that the 0.1.9 version of ivtv that ships with knoppmyth does not support vbi.

BTW - Even if you get a version of the IVTV driver that will capture the CC info, the current version of MythTV doesn't handle CC info embedded in the MPEG-2 stream.

tjc, thanks for pointing that out. If you are saying the mythtv won't display the subtitles on playback, that's good to know, but not a problem for what I am trying to do now. My dlink dsm-320 will display them. Having said this, I'm still not having any success. I did the following:
1. downloaded ivtv-0.2.0-rc3e
1.5. Shutdown myty backend and frontned
2. did a make in the drivers & utils directories
3. did a "make install" in the drivers & utils directories
4. depmod -ae
5. rebooted
6. ivtvctl --set-vbi = cc; ivtvctl --set-vbi-embed=1
ivtvctl confirmed that setting changes were made.
After the reboot I recorded a show that had subtitles, but no closed captions displayed on playback.
One thing that I wasn't able to run successfully was "rmmod ivtv" -- complained that the module was still in use. Having said this, I am guessing (perhaps incorrectly?) that the reboot ensured that the most recent driver was loaded.
Anyone have any suggestions / ideas / thoughts of what I did wrong? Is there an easy way to validate that the most recent driver was loaded?

well you are right the reboot should have loaded the latest driver, but to verify you can use the command dmesg | more and it will show the version when it shows ivtv loading. plus the fact that the commands are running without error now should be an indicator I would think. Just to be totaly honest I've never messed with cc at all.

Thanks for the pointer to dmesg -- the correct driver version is loading, so the issue is elsewhere. I am going to experiment a bit w/ different "stream types -- in BeyondTV I had to use a specific stream type to get it to work. Perhaps the same applies here. I'll post results as I learn more.
One last question -- the dmesg slot contained the following:
ivtv: Encoder Firmware is buggy, use version 0x02040011
Anyone seen this before?

Prosonik:
I have never been able to get myth to capture the closed-caption info in a way that worked with the DSM-320, but I have been able to do the following:
1. Play back mpeg2 streams captured with my myth backend.
2. Play back mpeg2 streams and CC-text captured with beyond TV.
In all cases, I used the Hauppauge pvr-250 card for doing the capture. To feed the DSM-320, I used the following approaches:
1. Under windows I have used the d-link UPNP server. All functons work but the DSM-320 menus feel a bit sluggish and FF/REW is slow.
2. Under linux I have used the Twonky UPNP server. DSM-320 feels much more "zippy" when using menus, but FF/REW did not work at all.
My DSM-320 hardware died suddenly and I have not replaced it. I am now using a Hauppauge MVP front-end with MVPMC myth front end and I am very happy with it.
