how can I secure these ports so that only the local machine sees them open?
My machine is the front and backend, and I don't want anything else on the network to see them.

easy - edit the mysql config file, I believe it's my.cnf or something like that and tell it what IP's are allowed access.

harder, but more secure - setup firewall rules. Far beyond the scope of a small post like this.

Actually X, you're thinking of access to the DB. Which of course is needed for remote frontend and slave backends. The ports he mentioned are used by MythTV (for frontends/backends). But without MythTV setup (which it sound like he doesn't have it (or he wouldn't want to do this..)), I don't see this as an issue.
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install gaurddog
Google is your friend.

I deny the mere existance of the possibility! I'm now going to stick my fingers in my ears and sing "LA-LA-LA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU! LA-LA-LA!" to keep the bad thoughts from getting in. ;-)
