Just wondering if there is any preventive maintenance I should do on my Myth box to keep it happy?

I've been recording a lot lately and thinking maybe I should defrag the hard drive? I have noticed it sputtering a bit lately.

How do you defrag in Linux?

Maybe I could just reformat the 'cache' partition?

Any thoughts?

I've used "tune2fs -c 3 -C 1 /dev/hda1" on my KnoppMyth computer. This will have it check the root file system every three boots. I've also done the same to my /cache and /myth partitions. If you stagger them, it will check a file system at every reboot. Then just get in the habit of rebooting the computer periodically. When I was running R4V5 I had a setup crash due to file system corruption. Ever since then, I've been a little concerned.

OK, thanks.

Well, I don't have to worry about rebooting since I'm using nvram wakeup.

However, I sometimes get a long delay when starting live TV. I such cases, I can hear the hard drive thrashing about for a while. I presume it's cleaning stuff up or buffering data?

The KnoppMyth Wiki mentions using the XFS file system. Is this still recommended?

the XFS filesystem is very good with large files, so it is not a bad idea. I use it for my /myth and /cache partitions myself.

IF the XFS filesystem is better, why then is the default not set to this?

well there is no definitive proof that XFS is better. I have one box that uses XFS and one that doesn't and I can't really see any discernible difference. I switched to XFS a long time ago to fix a problem, at the same time I turned off comm flag which I think was the real root of the problem back then, and have just never bothered to switch back as I wasn't having any problems.
