Post subject:  strange mplayer/mythvideo problem

Hello - I am having some trouble figuring out why mplayer on my SBE will not allow the mythtv user to play videos - I get the "loading" dialog that disapears and never plays the video. From a command line I get "Option Creating needs a parameter at line 1".

If I su, mplayer works from both within an X session or command line. So I checked permissions on both mplayer and the videos I am trying to play and everything seems to be fine. I even tried to adding the mythtv user to the root group, but no luck.

I am using R5A22. I have changed the path in the mythvideo setup to point to the correct path for mplayer. I have also recompiled mplayer following the tutorial found within the forums.

Everything else on the SBE that I know of works (I don't use all of the features). I can view recorded television shows, live tv and listen to mp3s.

My videos and mp3s(which work) are available to both my MBE and SBE via nfs from a third linux machine. The files are mounted in the exact same mount point on both SBE and MBE with the same permissions. My MBE (also R5A22) plays videos like a champ.

I am not sure what else to look for and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't know the problem precisely but from you have said I would like to propose a couple of questions.

When you recompiled mplayer did you do it on the MBE AND the SBE. Because if you have only done it on the MBE, the version on the SBE would be different and the libraries would also be different.

If you did copy across the new compiled version did you make it static in that all the libraries are included in the binary or did you link. If you just linked to the libraries and simply copied across the binary of mplayer, the new version maybe trying to call a new function and it will be looking in a old library on the SBE, thus it generates an error.

I suppose both of these don't explain why it works as root and not as mythtv, but it could be access to another directory or library, although this is just me clucthing at straws now.

Post subject:  mplayer reply

I did not recomp mplayer on the MBE - the MBE has had no problems, so I didn't feel the need to mess with it.

I only recompiled mplayer on the SBE, however it was one of my last steps, and out of desperation. I assume that mplayer was compiled dynamically, as I did not set any CC flags to compile statically.

As the mythtv user I tried a sudo mplayer and received the same result. I guess I'll try a "sudo su; /usr/local/bin/mplayer -blah" and see if that works - should i start that in a seperate shell? I am concerned about mythtv continuing to operate as root after I watch a movie. I guess I could write a script that does the su and then opens mplayer...

I dunno ... I'm stumped.

Thanks.

What kind of video card are you using? I ask b/c I had issues with an ATI Radeon 7000 and had to change to command line for mplayer in Mythsetup. I had to eliminate the -vo xv from command.

What version of Knoppmyth? R5A16 mplayer path is wrong in player settings.

Post subject:  R5A22

Ooops. I am using R5A22. Looks like I'm going to have to "scorched earth" both boxes. I have been searching the forums for weeks now ... I guess I should hit the home page at least once in a while.

From the home page @ mysettopbox.tv

Please don't use R5A22. If you are doing a new install, please use R5A16. I accidently included a SVN version of MythTV in R5A22. According to Isaac, there is "no guarantee" this will smoothly upgrade to 0.19. If you are using R5A22, we are working on a way to safely revert MythTV to 0.18.2. My humble apologoies for the mix up. Post subject:  I may have found the solution

The following were the contents of my ~mythtv/.mplayer/config:

"Creating config file: /home/mythtv/.mplayer/config
# Write your default config options here!"

You'll notice that the line starting with "Creating" was uncommented. I added the little # bugger in the beginning of the line and now mplayer works.

I don't remember editing the file ~mythtv/.mplayer/config file, and "Creating config file: /home/mythtv/.mplayer/config" isn't really my style of comment, but if it wasn't me, I sure don't have any other explination how it got there so...
As a sanity check, I added a new user: joebob. joebob could run mplayer just fine. So it must have been a mistake I made somewhere along the line...

Thanks for all of the input.
