Hi All,

I have built a MythTV box and I love it. I had never seen a TiVo until yesterday when I visited a friend. He showed me a neat feature that I don't know how to replicate in MythTV, and I wondered if MythTV can do it (if so, how?).

The feature is that the TiVo has a 30 minute buffer that it records to all the time. So, if the TiVo is set to channel 54 to receive "liveTV" and the user stops watching "LiveTV" by exiting out to the main menu screen. Then, let's say the user comes back 2 hours later and it is in a different program (but still on channel 54) and it is halfway through the 1 hour show. The user can move backward to the beginning of the program (or very close to it) and then start watching it (the recorded part).

It seems to me that the MythTV records "LiveTV" only when it is being watched or implemented. If I exit out to the menu system after watching LiveTV for a bit, recording of "LiveTV" stops and if I return 10 minutes, I can't go back and watch what I missed.

Maybe MythTV can act like a TiVo in this way and I just don't know how to configure it. I have tried searching the forum, but haven't successfully found the answer.

If anyone has any input, it would be greatly appreciated.

The live tv function has been changed in the 0.19 version. The ringbuffer is removed. Now all what you see in LiveTV is recorded as recordings. These files has an LivTV recording group and has set a short autoexpire time.

So you just has to wait for the next KM release...

0.19 is one step closer to doing this, but sadly, if you are not "in LiveTV" then it is not recording.

Thank you ille and nigelpearson,

I am giving a demonstration of KnoppMyth today and I am now better informed. I think KnoppMyth is great but several people in the audience are TiVo users, so I can reply appropriately.

Will others want to know how this demonstration goes?

It is to a very small group (5-6), many of whom who have never seen KnoppMyth or MythTV. All of have heard of MythTV because I rave about it (hehe). One has read an article about MythTV in the Wall Street Journal or similar big newspaper.

Display images.
Add additional storage (w/o possibly rendering the entire box useless).

Don't forget to them about the ability to view recordings on multiple TVs(multiple frontends) and also have access to central music & videos if you setup NFS.

This is a real biggie for me that I can watch my shows on either TV at my convenience and listen to music in either place as well.

And, of course, the big one that drove my away from my two Tivo boxes...

...The ability to record HDTV over the air.

(Yes, you can buy an HD-Tivo now, but it's a damn expensive solution and lacks the elegance of Myth. It also can't record two OTA stations, IIRC, while my Myth box handles three!)
