Post subject:  How do you Automatically Transcode to Save Disk Space

First, I have looked through multiple posts for this answer.
If I manually transcode a recording it works fine. The files come out more like 600 meg per hour.

I am going to be away from Network access and the Box for about 4 weeks. In about 3 days(family emergency) If it wasn't for that and limited time to ge to this I wouldn't ask you guys. The wife loves the functionality and wants to keep this running.

I am pretty sure in about 4 weeks time if not sooner she will be out of disk space on the box with the Standard 2gig per hour recordings and limited ability to auto delete those things that I personally don't watch.

I am trying to get the Auto Transcode function to work so that these will be smaller files with the understanding that it will decrease some quality. I will not be removing commercials at this time as I still am not happy with the way it Flags some things really good and others ... Well you all know.

I have turned off Comm Flagging and set the Automatically Transcode after Recording in the appropriate Recording profiles. But it still generates files in the 2 gig per hour range and doesn't seem to make them smaller.

Anyway, Thanks in Advance for the Help.

Check the logs (Information/System Status) or via Mythweb to make sure the transcoding jobs are actually running. If not you need to run mythtv-setup and tick relevant options there I think. If they are then check which profile is set for automatic transcoding (usually default) and what the bit rate is for this profile.

Transcoding never starts in the Automatic mode.
I have it checked in two of my Recording Profiles. It shows up on the First Page of each Profile. I set it in Default and Low.
Where would I look otherwise to see if the Automatic Transcode is failing? I checked both Mythweb and Information>System Status.

I have Default set at 2000/2000 BR on a 640x480 The recording looks great. it runs about 2.1 Gig per hour. When I manually transcode one of these it comes out at around 600 MB/HR.

I have Low set as Follows 1100/1100 BR on a 544x480. The recording looks similar and it is still generating about 2 gig per hour.

In my Capture Card Setup area under Mythtv-setup the only option that seemed appropriate is PVR 250/350. Not sure if that is ok but it seems to work.

Manual mode does transcode and I see that both in the Mythweb and Information>System Status areas.

So it seems it is not running the auto-transcode jobs. Have you exited the front end and run mythtv-setup from the command line? There are some options there that enable auto transcoding. Then under the transcoding profiles (as distinct from recording profiles) there are some options as well. See here if you haven't already:

I read through that. I found I don't see some of the menu's and selections it talks about in there.

In looking through there and seeing the differences, I assumed that my differences were due to a newer or different version of Myth within KnoppMyth.

Thanks!

Actually thats quite possible. I'm on A22 which uses a pre-release 0.19 version, whereas A30 uses a release 0.18.2 version. I'm afraid I don't know what 0.18.x looks like and how its different  Nevertheless I'd check carefully what you do have. You didn't answer if you've run mythtv-setup (which is not the same as the setup section in the frontend).

Sorry, I got pulled away from the Machine sooner than expected.
I have some access where I am at but will not be able to make changes to the machine until I return.

Regarding running mythtv-setup Yes, I have run it and looked in there again before I left.

I did manage to get some additional space, and actively spent time teaching the Transcode function before I left. It may get through this time, if not Oh well. This is something I hope we can find a fix for future reference.

Bump to ask whether you ever found a solution to this problem.

Thanks for asking. No I did not.
I have since upgraded to R5C7 it still seems to have some issues there as I have been reading in other parts of this forum.

Waiting to resolve another issue due to /var/log filling up but that is another post.

Bigbro - Not to hijack this, but have you seen the posting about fixing the log rolling? It turns out to be as simple as removing a single duplicated file. Please follow up here - http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 1&start=18

Ob. on topic content... The only transcoding I did with R5C7 was the lossless mpeg2 -> mpeg2, but it worked pretty well and saved me plenty of space with no loss of quality. A 32 minute recording (including slop time) would typically end up with 22-23 minutes of content for nearly a 30% space recovery. The main drawback was that it would lose CC information in the process, but since the CC playback was less than stellar anyway that was a small loss.

Double check that everything is set up correctly according to the MythTV docs:

Be aware that TJC reports lossless mpeg2 trasncoding is broken in R5D1. We're not sure if *any* transcoding works in R5D1.

I believe it is fixed in Mythtv 0.20.

So mpeg2 to mpeg4 transcoding doesn't work in R5D1? What about automatically cutting the commercials? Will that work?

I believe that lossless mpeg2 transcoding is what does the commercial cutting, so commercial cutting definitely doesn't work in R5D1.

Jus' figured I'd post an update. I upgraded to 0.20 an' transcoding works great.
