I am using webmin to create a samba share. After I create the share, I try to connect from my XP home machine. I try to map the share as a drive and as part of the process authentication is required. I try all sorts of user names and passwords and I am unable to gain access to my samba share.
C:\>net use x: \\192.168.1.101\mythtv
The password or user name is invalid for \\192.168.1.101\mythtv.
Enter the user name for '192.168.1.101': mythtv
Enter the password for 192.168.1.101:
System error 1326 has occurred.
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I have review the samba documentation with no success.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike G.

it looks like your almost there. From the looks of things your logged onto your XP box as a user called mythtv? You should make a user name that is the one you put in when you installed mythtv, then add the password to the end of the net use command. The user name you send to 192.168.101.1 will be whatever your logged onto windows as when you run the command.
net use x: \\192.168.1.101\mythtv <your password here>
Maybe that is the problem?

Can you browse to your home directory on your linux box??
I have found that before I can see my linux box in Network Places I have to be logged into windows with the same user/password as created for the linux user. Make sure the you have the WORKGROUP set correctly in the smb.conf file or your linux box won't show in Network Places. Don't forget to restart your samba server after any changes to the smb.conf file.
Add the encrypted password to the smbpasswd file by executing the following command from the samba folder for each user you want to access the box.
smbpasswd -a username
it will prompt twice for the user's matching password.
The syntax to map the drives as Matt has it works for me. Setting the permissions so I can write to the folder is another story.
Hope this helps a bit.
Alan

Did you create the samba users on the Linux box using "smbpasswd -a" to add root and "smbpasswd -a username" to add a user? You need to create both unix users and then the samba users in order to access a SAMBA share. Also make sure encrypt password = yes in the /etc/smb.conf file.

This one got me for a while as well. Try adding the windows user to the group that owns the directory on the Linux Box. just add the user to the end of the proper line in /etc/group.
example (where you want the windows user to write to files owned by mythtv group):
mythtv:x:101:windows_user

thanks for the tip, tyro. I haven't had to do it yet, but often run into issues with shares on my Linux box using samba, often just use chmod till it lets me write to it

I figured out my problem. The firewall on my windows PC was not allowing a connect to the samba server. I disabled the firewall and things started to work.
Thanks for the assistance.
