If I want to add VNC I need to do an apt-get update before installing. Will the apt-get update break anything in R5B7? Don't want to do it and have to do another install! |

The apt-get update won't break anything. It's the apt-get install that you need to be afraid of. As for that, try it. It will tell you what it wants to do and ask for confirmation. If you see it removing packages it shouldn't or asking for lots of new/updated stuff that it "depends on" say no way! Then you're probably looking at building from source... |

Sorry it is the apt-get install. My bad... I got the info from this thread http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8520 and it worked ok when I was playing with R50A30.2 but I got a kinda working system with B7 and I didn't want to destroy it. I'll look into building from source. Thanks. |

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!! I did exactly as recommended here http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=x11vncHowTo on R5B7 and it totally trashed my system. Why? because I didn't scroll down a few pages where an addendum sat warning you of this with a workaround thus (that I have tested and deffo works):- Code: For R5B7, the default apt configuration will install the unstable version of x11vnc, which requires updates of xserver-xorg. These updates broke the X configuration on my machine. A simple workaround is to install the stable version of x11vnc:
1. nano /etc/apt/sources.list change "unstable" on the first line to "stable", save the file 2. apt-get update 3. apt-get install x11vnc 4. return apt configuration to its previous state: nano /etc/apt/sources.list change "stable" on the first line back to "unstable", save the file apt-get update For the curious if you DO NOT follow the above instructions the regular debian-unstable vnc install will attempt to update 100+ packages including xserver-xorg. It will deinstall your current x server and myth add-ons, you will panic and feel very sad, so don't do it. I have subsequently reinstalled myth R5B7 and created a script to do a lot of my personal alterations so in future I should hopefully be able to recreate my system in 2 hours from scratch. It's like practicing rifle stripping ala jarhead ![]() |

Why is the sources list pointing to the unstable section in the first place? |

Post subject: | HELP!!! |
I fragged my mythbox for a fourth time trying to get VNC to work. I would just stop, but others state it works great. I want to control what is displayed on my TV with my wireless laptop and VNC controlling my frontend. Is this possible, or will I only be able to get a pretty x-window session that is not what my frontend is displaying? Please help. When I do the get-app install x11vnc it proceeds to install x11vnx, but then I'm prompted with a few questions. What are the answers to the three questions the x11vnc asks? |
