I am using the Dragon spec that I built my mythtv box with. I have gotten my sound to work from looking at the posts here and from some others posts and I would like to thank everyone who helped. However I am getting sound out of xine and mplayer but it is just 2 channel stero not the digital DTS that should be coming out of the digital out. If I set xine to pass though I get the error message "the audio device is unavailable. please verify if another program already use it." If I go back to 2.0 stero it plays. Does know how to fix this or point me to an article about this, I did search but didn't find anything that I could see. Thanks again for the help. |

I think this page has most all the information on digital audio for knoppmyth. Much of it is outdated, and it is scattered throughout the page, but give it a look. http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... AudioHowTo |

......... If I set xine to pass though I get the error message "the audio device is unavailable. please verify if another program already use it." Me too, but if I OK that dialog and then press ENTER, it plays anyway, and sounds great. Try that, and see if we're in the same boat. |

I had been to that site and it is talking about getting your digital out (spif) to work......which my does but just not with sorround sound......but I didn't see anything about getting 5.1 or 6.1 out..... I did try to click on and the message and it does go away......but when I hit enter nothing happens...... |

well I'm not sure what to tell you my digital out works just fine all the way around. I use the passthrough options on everything, and it passes through 5.1 sound when it's there and regular stereo when the program doesn't have 5.1 I didn't do anything special, but I am using different hardware. I use the onboard sound from an Abit AS8 board. |

That could be part of the issue a different sound card I did some more checking on web site for alsa.......and didn't see the chaintech sound card listed on there supported card section......which is strange since it is listed as the sound card used in the dragon specs.... |

I've never tried xine, so I'm not sure which passthrough option you are using. I was able to get 5.1 working with mplayer by setting the AC3 and 5.1 passthrough in the mythtv settings. I also had to turn off "use mythtv volume controls". Another thing to look at: The /etc/asound.conf examples floating around often include rate conversions. I think this will defeat 5.1 passthrough. You might have more luck if you set up the adsp_map option correctly then use /dev/adsp directly as described in the wiki. I didn't play around with this enough to confirm this, but things worked better for me using /dev/adsp. Cheers, Allen |

it has been a while since I just tried to play a dvd from the drive and not one of the ones off of the hard drive. If I play a dvd I get 5.1 or 6.1 but if I try to play the same dvd from the hard drive I get the message about some other program using the sound card. Both times I am using the xine program. |

just and update I could not mplayer to do any better than Dobly ProLogic II so I just switched to using xine for ISO and VOB files with that I can get 5.1 out from VOB and 5.1 or 6.1 out from ISO. Thanks for all the help. |
