Has anyone had any luck with R5B7 and the vonageSniff.pl script with wireless access? I spent some time installing the proper Perl modules then changed the config to use "atml0" for internet device, the mythbox IP as where to send the packets, and port 5161 as the port to listen for. I've got one of the original Motorola Vonage boxes behind a Netgear router with the proper ports forwarded. When I run the vonageSniff.pl script, it says that it's sniffing for packets but nothing seems to happen when I receive a phone call. Since there are so many places I could be going wrong with the config, I'm not even sure where to start changing it. I have a feeling that the problem is I'm somehow not sniffing the right place to get the Caller ID info that's being transmitted on port 5161 because on my other PCs there's no reported traffic on that port if I just listen to the network with ethereal. Any ideas? |

None at all. I'm fairly convinced that the problem lies in how the Vonage data is transmitted. My setup is like this: Cable Modem > Netgear router > Vonage box. If I understand it properly, Caller-ID information comes from the internet to the router which then (via port forwarding) sends it to the Vonage box. I got the impressioin that those Caller-ID packets should be "seen" by other computers on the network, but it's not. I've run ethereal on 3 different machines, and there were no packets received during incoming calls. So, the question becomes a more general network one: is there any way to intercept the packets that come in on port 5161 before they are transmitted to the Vonage adapter? |

the caller id is in a sip packet, which is a directed packet, and will not be "seen" by any other computer on a switched network. with cheap equipment I don't know that you'll have any luck sniffing this. you'll either need the vonage box connected to a hub with the computer you want to sniff the traffic, or you'll have to have a monitor/roving analysis port (only available on high end switches) to mirror the traffic from the vonage port. |

That's a conclusive answer, thanks. I'll keep the script in mind when I upgrade my network equipment, but it's going on the shelf for now. |

I went the low tech method with a crappy old ext modem up to my Windows box which sends any incoming calls across the network to my yac clients and the xyac client of KnoppMyth box. I have vonage too but what I setup would be a PIA to use if don't have a PC on 24x7 or phone line near knoppmyth box. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... t=callerid |
