At risk of offending people... There are days when I think we really need to make newbies take a test when they sign up and assign them a "clue score" based on the results. That way we could tailor advice to the appropriate level...

It's enormously frustrating to either waste time telling somebody with 5 years of Unix sysadmin experience how to symlink to a device, or trying to get someone who hasn't got the first clue about ls to check their file permissions...

Sadly I think self rating is doomed to fail due to delusions of cluefulness or self doubt for most folks who fall between the wide eyed innocents and hardboiled systems guys.

OK, I''ll get down off the soap box now...

I agree, as I too have had delusions of grandier when I thought I knew what I was doing when in fact I didn't know I needed to press the spacebar. For someone who has been working in IT for over 10 years I feel belittled.

I need to take the test, where do I sign up.

I think they might have slipped something into the water supply in Arlington. I just finished reading the latest round of volleys from tjc and I'm still laughing.

Hopefully not the water here, I just replaced the filter cartridge after all... ;-)

Heck, and you all haven't even heard the storys like, what not to do when you're using a dish towel as a surrogate salad spinner (losing your grip on one end is BAD). ;-)

It truly upsets me when folks posts things where it does not belong. People, I'm trying to make it easy. Read the frelling description before you post. Why the hell is this so difficult? There is only one person on the forum that would have difficulty reading and his is a valid medical reason (yet, he manages to post it the correct areas...). If you cannot read, simply put you have no reason to be at a keyboard (PERIOD).

Death to off topic posts! (Well other than ones that are properly filed under "off topic".) ;-)

Tier 1 and Tier 2 both need purges this week, and we won't even talk about the eternal travails of the Installation topic... :( And I've got to agree that newbies scattering off topic posts like a trail of rabbit turds offends my sense of order too.

I for one pledge to pay more attention to which topic messages ahve been posted under and not to respond to questions posted where they don't belong.
