For those whose boxens just sit idling for hours on end just waiting for the next recording, you may want to donate those spare CPU cycles to a good cause. Stanford's goal: to understand protein folding, protein aggregation, and related diseases What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. Stanford uses novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct Stanford's approach to examine folding related disease. How can you help? You can help Stanford's project by downloading and running their client software. Stanford's algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, Stanford gets a commensurate increase in simulation speed. It runs with the highest nice value possible so it only uses the cycles you aren't. I've been running it for a couple weeks now and haven't noticed any difference in performance. Download the client from stanford. http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html - when downloaded should have the name: FAH502-Linux.exe . Create a directory where you'll want to do your folding. Place FAH502--Linux.exe into the dir. To make it executable from the shell type: "chmod 700 FAH502-Linux.exe" (without the quotes of course, also remember that Linux IS case sensitive). This will allow the owner of the program system to run it. -get into the console and type Code: ./FAH502-Linux.exe -config The client will ask you some questions Code: 1) User name - the name you wish to fold under
2) Team - 50975 3) Ask before fetching work - no 4) Use Internet settings - no 5) Use proxy - no (you should not have to , but everyone's network is different) 6) Allow receipt of work assignments and return of results greater than 5MB in size - This is how you start folding the "Big Packets" or " Big Work Units" . no 7) Change Advanced uptions - no This is a good way to ease the guilt of being too cheap to donate ca$h to charity. Just make sure your CPU is well cooled. |

I tried this for a while, and it worked fine most of the time, but I had to stop folding when I was burning recordings to DVD, as it'd cause that process to slow to a crawl. Other than that I didn't experience any problems with it on a FE/BE system. |

I hope it works better than it did a year ago. I was always having to restart the process manually and fix stuff. I got tired of it breaking all the time and I quit. Does it work rock-solid now? |

Command line versions for both windows and linux are solid. I haven't had a problem with either yet, but I've only been running it for 2 weeks. I've created a KnoppMyth team. When asked during the config use team # 50975 |

My box is already folding for http://www.littlewhitedog.com. I haven't noticed any slow downs or issues and it's been folding for almost 6 months now. |

That's quite the farm you have going there. I my box has yet to register its first unit for this group. http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=50975 |

Cecil, I hope you don't mind that I linked the image to the Knoppmyth F@H team. If you do, just let me know and I will remove it. |

It's mostly thanks to you chrisj. I've found a cool stat site the gives historical stats and pridictions. Take a look http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=1002&tm=50975 |
