Does anyone know if there is any support for HD-DVD in MythTV? Could you put the X-Box 360 drive in a frontend and play HD-DVDs? What about rips? I hear that there is a way to rip HD-DVDs now, would Xine or Mplayer be able to play those files?

thoughts?

I think it will be a long time before it's possible for the average user to bypass DRM on HD-DVD. Look at what's going on with CableCards. I expect HD-DVD drives to follow suit, and only work on certified systems that have other DRM-compliant features like a BIOS handshake. Nobody in Hollywood wants to see HD-DVD drives sold to do-it-yourselfers, at least not ones capable of independently decoding a protected disc.
If/When it becomes possible in Myth, I'm sure that this forum will not allow discussion of how to do it. Although, I could forsee discussions on using such a drive to do things that you should be allowed to do such as:
a) Playing a HD-DVD disc on your non-Vista HTPC
b) (a) above, for the purposes of enjoying the disc in HD, when the disc wants to limit you to S-Video for DRM purposes.

See how we're in trouble already? (a) and (b) sound pretty reasonable to most folks, but I'm pretty sure that if you discussed with the studio bigwigs, they would exhibit physical changes (sweating, bulging eyes, throbbing veins in neck) at the mention of (a), and (b) would probably cause blood to ooze from the wrinkles in their foreheads.

With the rumors floating earlier this week I think will be a long time in tech years, but a short time in dog years. Question is now does this shoot HD-DVDs popularity up or make Blue-Ray more appealing to content industry?

I don't think hackability would sway the consumers enough to overcome the backlash from the studios. If one proves to be more secure than the other (i.e. rampant piracy of HD-DVD while blu-ray remains secure, or vice-versa), then the studios will abandon ship and flock to the other medium. Just my opinion, for today, which may change.

I think the recent news of Blu-Ray not allowing their medium to be used for the adult entertainment industry, will have a much more dramatic effect than the DRM problem.
(Don't look at me, I don't even own a pornagraph!)

Already done, protected and hacked... the first HD-DVD appeared on a bittorrent tracker this week. It's gonna happen fast. The current DRM on HD-DVD is being broken by some 14 year-old as we speak. If they give us physical media with info on it someone will figure out how to get to the info and share it with the world quickly.

Making hardware DRM-compliant is kinda scary, though. I hate the idea of having to use, gulp, vista to watch a movie. However, they can't get away with too insidious a scheme. Buyers will rebel and stop purchasing the product, or sue (look at what happened with that Sony "rootkit" that was attached to some CD's).

My prediction is that it'll make it's way to myth, and fast. ROM drives will start to be released in the next 2-3 months and it will be a race to get them to work in all sorts of hardware/software configurations. The 360 drive can be slipped into a windows setup without much trouble now. If you plug one into a mac, it automatically recognizes it as an HD-DVD drive. You can't use it only because there's no mac HD-DVD software player. Now... how long until you think it'll be usable with Linux? I doubt long.

I bet we'll how to implement them rather than if we can implement them in 6-8 months.

info on current HD content encryption sceme (and how it's been broken):http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Access_Content_System.

to answer the first poster's question directly... at least for the xbox360's player, it seems that the AACS is built into the player. so concievably, if you had the right drivers and a program that could play HD-DVD (i don't beleive any do yet... but that's just a matter of time), you could plug the drive in and play movies. however, the AACS sceme would block you from ripping (or even seeing) the content in raw form. that is, unless you have a way around the encryption...

It wasn't put there by an "average user". To my knowledge, there are no generic cracking tools that can defeat the protection, unassisted.

oh... agreed! but my point was it's already being defeated and will be available to the "average user" (who doesn't mind breaking the law) in time.

more to the point... playback is right around the corner. i'd be suprised if we don't see people mucking around with it for mythtv before the end of the year. for that matter, as soon as the burners are affordable, we'll see ways to (probably illegally) rip and burn.

anyway... i don't think hardware is slowing this down. as soon as someone gets linux drivers and a player to handle HD-DVD, i don't see why the xbox drive wouldn't work in myth.

If you want a good amount of insight on the overwhelming security on HD-DVD (blue ray the same) check out the "Security Now" Podcast #73 and #74. Very good information, especially about how bogged down Vista will be just to support it even if you aren't going to be playing them. Like all DRM it'll be cracked shortly after it comes to market.

I see that this topic died a while back. Now that blue ray will be the new standard, I wanna know if myth will support watching a blue ray disc if I buy a blue ray dvd rom player?

I will upgrade if I have too. I'm running R5F1 right now...

I'm not concerned with ripping, just watching!!!

A blue ray dvd rom is much cheaper than a player...

thanks

Digital Rights Management (DRM) prevents your computer from decoding the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray discs. Because KnoppMyth is produced and served in the USA, the maintainers cannot distribute any software that circumvents or otherwise "decodes" the DRM (including playing) on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Try searching for posts by user "Zotty" in the doom9 forums for some possible ideas of what you need to do.

R5.5 does include support to playback unencrypted highly defined disk content.
