I just got an optical fiber pulled to our little development of 52 homes. Paxio is now providing a gig of bandwidth to our little community. I have 100M service -- symmetric. (My router can only push 40M bps up and down, tho. Gotta get a new one!) Anyone have a really big download to try? How about a Myth backend in one house and a frontend in another? The possibilities are endless! (As someone around here says a lot.)

My "standard" cable is 7mb down 1mb upstream (70gb/month total bandwidth allowed), it's like 35 bucks or something. For another 10/month I can bump that to 10mb down and a full 1 mb up (and raise my cap to 100gb/month). That's our "extreme" internet here. The next level up is called Nitro and runs $100/month and gets you 25mb down and still the same crappy 1mb upstream. Total traffic is upped to 150gb/month. I think you got yourself a good deal there. I had access for a while to a nitro account, and couldn't get the huge speeds I had expected unless I was downloading a few things at a time. I ended up find torrents for a few different linux distros and loading them up at the same time. Find a Ubuntu torrent with a ton of people on it, a FC torrent with a bunch of people on it, and maybe one or two others that have a lot of seeds and see what you get all combined. I wish i had that kinda bandwidth. Congrats. |

I should probably do something useful with it like host a mirror site for KM distros. I don't think I would notice the loss of bandwidth. As soon as I get my m0n0wall on a beefier platform I should be able to use more than a measly 40M bps! |

God my country is so behind the times. I pay AU$80 for a measly ADSL1 512/512 connection. All the ADSL2+ Plans are capped to 25gig and I download 3 times that on my current connection!

Actually, you could seed the torrent  This would encourage more seeders overall, since the upstream bandwidth usage for any individual seeder would go way down if you used even a little of yours.

I'm definitely interested in seeding a torrent. If or when a new version comes out I'll add my server to the mix. I have a better firewall now...

Does anyone know of a good Linux command-line bittorrent client? I don't have no stinkin' X on my 24/7 web server so the pretty Java ones won't work for me. |

Funny you should mention it... My ISP, Paxio, was contacted by the City of Fontana to possibly string fiber to their whole town. Paxio is doing this already in a couple of places. Sadly I don't think it went anywhere. The City wasn't too serious, or maybe they picked a different player. Too bad, 'cuz all the phone companies are paying lip service to fiber but not doing anything about it. I'll ask him if anything ever came of it. |

Yeah, I recall the city wanting to o something w/ fiber. I figure I'd hear if/when it was available... Nothing yet.

Azureus can be run as a deamon (headless), and there is a web interface plugin to access it from other pc's. This works quite well. Resources are a lot lower when it is run like this. I like it more than torrentflux as it's throttling and priority features are better. BigB. |
