Hi,

Has anyone played with one of WD big boys? Best Buy, 1 tb single drive for ~$300 with a built in server.

Hold onto the receipt... there are some clearance moves going on at BB... they have a 30-day price match. By me they were selling a 1tb external for $239. Might not be the same unit, but again it might be so check back before the 30 days are up, you may get some $$ back.

I know it's apples to oranges but have a 500GB WD Netcenter, been serving movies and music for better then 6 months without problems. Slower then .... but it works for .vobs and even HD streams transfered over and it's fanless, silent.

Hi,

A little update on the WD bookworld network drive.. We obtained one for work 1tb @ $300 wasn't bad and figured if it was turned into a brick it was still usable as a drive. You can also plug in a second usb tb drive.

There is a simple hack that allows some neat tricks because it opens ssh. The hacks work so well (few tricks learned along the way) however it worked out so well that I grabbed a 500 gig <$300 for myself.

Works great for long term storage of files and only draws ~20 watts. That is almost green.

I use rsync to send files to it and mount it for play out of my music, gallery & videos. 1gig-a-bit network card built in.

Have not done any speed tests but seems to not cause any issues with play back.
