If you look at the last 2 or 3 pages of the Memberlist, it's pretty obvious who the spam accounts are. The are all of the format "Word_WordMixofNumAndChar". They all started appearing in Jan 2008. I don't know how you could machine identify them, but a person could pick them out and delete them pretty easy. All the account names are longer that 10 characters. Maybe limiting new account names to 10 or less would stop the automated creations.

All I am saying is that the mod I used has been 100% effective since I have had it. I don't have a lot of traffic, but it has blocked at least 120 spammers, I get an e-mail each time it does Registering is still simple for humans, and it's proactive instead of reacting after they already register. But like I said, I have little traffic on my site, so I don't know for sure how it would work here.

As a short term solution that doesn't require programming, I think that "SnapRoll" should be authorized to delete accounts. He seems to be first on the spot!

The solution is easy - just add a non-standard question to the signup. Such as:

Linus Torvalds is associated with this popular kernel: [ ]

3 + 4 = ?

Are you a robot?

Please spell Linux: [ ]

This will kill the spambots.

I believe that requires the textual confirmation mod that I was talking about thornsoft.

It's getting to the point where I'm almost afraid to get caught browsing the forum from work. Goofing-off is one thing, but viewing porn will get you fired.

In all seriousness, Props to Dale, Cecil, (others?) for keeping up on the problem. The offending posts are generally gone within hours. This forum is a service to all and being a porn monitor is more than you probably signed-up for. Thanks!

Agree. Ive been a little concerned about browsing while at work in case I misclicked or the spammers found a way to post titles that fit in with the board. Props to admins for keeping it as clean as they can tho.

Well, you can always tell its spam by the subject. Just don't read the obvious spam items!

But I have to agree, I am somewhat concerned even surfing the forum now during the day as even the subject lines are sometimes enough to make me hide them from the powers that be in my company.

Really stinks that some spammer can take this much control over my forum browsing.....

I was kinda trying to be tongue-in-cheek on that one. I guess my wit's a little dry.

Oh, but I thought Angelina Jolie was a regular contributer here! I was so shocked at her photos. Even more shocking was that her face didn't match the rest of her body. Has she recently had a head transplant??

Oh before she had her head transplant, she was a great coder. ;)

This conversation just flew, tumbling end over end, across the line from silly to downright bizarre.

What a bunch of crazies we are... ;-)

Geeks + Porn = You never know.

For example, show some geeks a picture of a naked woman and the first thing they notice is the poor photoshop work. Really! Personally, I didn't notice her head.
