How do we get rid of scum like Mike_Lamploughe618e? I was thinking maybe a filter which auto suspends based on a regex pattern.
Putting porno spam in a family-friendly forum is lower than shark poo. Cecil should sue.

Seconded. Cecil should sue. You beat me to it Mike - I was going to post something just like your Delete/Suspend/Kill sentiments.

Add Louie_Greenlees3a0f7 to the list.

It looks like our happy home has been targeted. Unfortunately it is probably a side-effect of letting users browse the forum without logging in. We can now power-search the forum using Google, but so can the botnets.

The best thing we can do for now is avoid even viewing the post. With a title like "Paris Hilton Nude" you know it's not a post from someone looking for KM assistance. Viewing the post loads the images which still count as "Hits" on for the porn site.

I agree, what a mess this morning.

Looks like Captcha might help some, may be a good method and it is built in to PHPBB.

I don't like typing in a code when posting but, better than the spam.

It would be good if the Captcha could be enforced for new users only.

I was thinking that, too. A minimum number of posts or time would eliminate them from the list. I doubt they ever go to much effort.

Good to see that not many have viewed the posts.

If there are still porn posts, please pm me so I can take care of it.
I just might have missed some.

Post subject:  Allow the Porn?

Hear me out, but maybe Cecil et al should ALLOW the porn spam. Cecil should update the user agreement to allow porn, and links to porn sites to be posted. Since these are commercial ventures, it's not unreasonable for Cecil to collect a "nominal" fee from advertisers say $1,000,000.00/post. The Fee would serve to "weed-out" the dirtbag porn sites, and ensure that only the highest-quality porn is advertised on the site. This could be of great service to KM forum members, who also happen to be porn aficionados. (???)

The flip side, is that anyone who posts porn in violation of the updated agreement could be sued for serious cash for "Theft of Services"
Of course I couldn't guess how many Forum users
1. Are smart enough to build/maintain a homebrew PVR. (i.e. forum members)
2. Like Porn. (computer geeks have their stereotypes.)
3. Are too dumb to otherwise find their own porn on the internet. (i.e ads would help them)

On other forums where I am not a forum administrator, I make it a habit to respond to porn/spam posts with a single message with the word "spam" in it. That way, if admin are away for a while and likely to miss seeing some of the spam, they can search for the word spam and find it.

Only works if the forum participants make a habit of it, though.

Brendan, that's a good idea! Could the moderators and Cecil comment on this? In my opinions it sound like a simple task for anyone to "mark" the thread as spam by simply replying on it.

I have used phpBB2 before and was able to cut down on spammers registering with a mod that required them to type in a word or answer a question during registration. None of the letter recognition or e-mail confirmation did squat for me.

I think the thing was called "textual confirmation". Might be worth looking into.

I did a mod on one of my phpBB forums to not allow sign ups if information other than the email and password were filled out. That cut down the spam registrations completely.
