To celebrate the release of R5.5 and my birthday (a few days later), I'll be hosting a party in IRC starting a 6:00 PM PDT. I hope to see everyone on irc.freenode.net #knoppmyth.

Cecil

What is the easiest way to start using IRC?

I really hate to admit it but I have never used IRC before.

Perhaps someone could give a few tips?
- The best (one or two) clients to try
- Setup
- Firewall issues?
- First use
- Maybe a Windows client to try

One of the most popular windows clients is mIRC: www.mirc.com

Once you've set your nickname etc in "tools --> options --> connect" you can just type:
Code:
/server irc.freenode.net
/join #knoppmyth

Which will connect you to the irc server and join the correct channel

Is this going to be the date of the release, or a party to discuss the successes of the release?

Cecil,

Happy Birthday too you

Please consider yourself lucky. If you were one of my children you would have had to put up with listening to me sing happy birthday to you, totally out of key, on your cell phone :-).

ChatZilla is good too - it's a Firefox extension.

I tried mIRC on one of my Windows boxes, and soon found out that
there are firewall and NAT issues to resolve. I presume that
Chatzilla has the same issues?

I'll try to get there on 5-2 if I can figure out what ports to forward.

Hmmm. I suppose I could connect directly with a Linux box doing
dial-up.

Oh crud, I just realized that this is Friday evening and I've got a prior commitment. NERAX is this weekend and I've even got one of my cousins coming in for it along with the local beer buddies...

Any chance of getting the time in GMT so that I can work out what time it will be here in Aussie Land, you know that place Down Under.

I don't know the offset for Pacific DaylightSaving Time.
