wells its not going to happen until QT is ported to windows in "late Q2 of 2005", and then only if someone is really motivated.. i would love to see the frontend be ported, i could careless about the backend. thats my feeling anway.

I would rather not have it ported at all. I can just see all the mythtv sux0rs posts cause winXP crashed on someone.

I personally dont think XP has the stability needed for a backend, but a nice frontend would be nice

Why the FRELL did you create a poll about MythTV on WinXP in Linux -> General? Windows is off topic (PERIOD).

Its Linux and it's General and seems worth a discusion re Mythtv
But if it upsets you that much remove it.
Cheers

My point is Linux -> General is for general discussions related to Linux. Porting an exist app to another operating system has nothing to do with Linux.

Porting frontend to windows is a waste of time. Why go through the hastle when you can run off the live-cd?

Why go through all the hastle of closing all your applications and rebooting everytime you want to watch something and then rebooting and re-opening all your applications when you want to go back to work.
I think there is one advantage to getting the backend working on windows. Thats drivers. Whenever Hauppauge changes their hardware even a little bit they release an updated driver that works with it. On the Linux side, things just arn't as simple.
There has been a little talk about porting it on the dev list. It seems that any in depth discussion is on hold until the qt license is out. So there is some interest at least. I even volunteered to help with it.
From what I've heard MythTV would kill Windows Media Center if they were in direct competition. That would be fun to see.
It does seem like a terrible idea to spend $100+ on an OS that mainly offers a popular user interface and then unplug the mouse and keyboard.

I would prefer win2k, but maybe a xp port would be compatible. I think XP stinks, Hopefully by the time microsoft depreciates win2k I should be windows periphrial free and somebody willl get borderless printing right in linux. I also refuse to have microsoft forcing my to call them for permission to reload windows onto another hard drive. I mean who in their right mind doesn't install to a new disk instead of overwriting thier old system.
I disagree that the frontend CD is an option. I would like to be able to load up a myth frontend on my win2k box just like I can load up a frontend on a non dedicated myth box.
A myth front/backend on windows might put MCE on the scrap heap where it belongs.

Yikes, You guys are suggesting multitasking on a windows machine!? From my experience it is hard enough to certain get "windows compatible" hardware to work on a windows machine. Microsoft had to make add-ons/changes to their own OS to get Media Center working. With all the different hardware choices the help forums would have to be ran on a clustered server to keep up!
Just the other day I installed a piece of Microsoft made (atleast 2 years now)hardware that gave me the XP "Driver not signed..." warning..
One of the benefits (and problems) of linux is the lack of supported hardware, thus giving us a handful of choices that work really well rather than 100 choices that run the gambit of stability.

Bah, as far as I am concerned, the WinXP frontend exists...
Mythweb + DSMyth (dsmyth.sourceforge.net, to play Myth files in Win player)
You can schedule recordings, manage conflicts, watch recordings, what else could you want? (granted, I miss the ability to "skip" by a certain amount).
Another possibility could be to run the Win port of mplayer. Unfortunately, the stock version does not support some of Myth's .nuv files correctly (needs the "myth" patch and I can't build it... if someone could do this, it would be swell).
And yes, it's really useful and not comparable to booting, configuring and running off the live CD. Just two different things.

You can't bookmark a file and come back to that same spot later with any windows interface I know. This is a huge deal to me since I have a 9 month old, I get my tv in 5 -10 minute shots, or I get interrupted in the middle of a movie when she wakes up.
When you delete a recording you don't get asked if you would like to record it again. This is a great feature when you discover the show is partially/totally unwatchable because some stupid golf game went into sudden death, or the broadcast signal crapped out.
Yes, I can watch stuff on windows with what is available, but it is to inconvienent.
and don't tell me winmyth is even useable, who came up with the idea to use .NET?

Yes, ok, you're right of course. But as an *alternate* frontend, it works.
(I use it mostly to bring up Teletubbies on my desk when I have to watch my son.... great way to keep him in sight, and quiet...)
