Apple switches to Intel chips, and Debian sarge released as stable.

Working in the IT industry on both PCs and Macs it has sent a chill to my bones now that Apple are crossing over. There is no snow where I am from, but it will soon be pooring problems from clients as soon as we start putting those new macs in. I can see it now.

I better get a good rain coat.

Oddly enough, I was just thinking of getting a Mac and this announcement really put the brakes on it. Why would anyone buy a Mac in the coming year, knowing they're getting an already-obsolete computer? I can see Apple's sales having a bit of trouble in the next 12 months. And, like you say, Intel?!?! They're going for the 64-bit P4 when AMD is already the leader in that particular architecture. I think the decision is more based on politics than technical reasons.

Heh, I was thinking the same thing, esp. from what I've read in the dual-core arena. But I guess the current 2x price for AMD dualcores vs. Intel dualcores is a problem there... :)

well this is the only time that the price difference has been there, and I'm sure within the next year the timeframe apple is talking about it will be rectified, besides do you really thing amd wouldn't cut apple one heck of a deal?

You may find that apple is going with Intel, (apart from the politics of it all) is that the floating point on a P4 craps all over the AMD. AMD make a great process at a great price and for general use and gaming they can't be beat. But when it comes to number crunching the Intel outshine AMD.

Just my take on it.

floating point has been one of amd's strongest suits since the invention of the athlon with the three floating point units, the only reason intel outpaces them here is because of the still large clock speed difference, and the fact that most anywhere that intel is faster has very few branch mispredictions and doesn't hurt too much with their 10 mile long pipeline.

I'm just waiting for the dual core A64's and it will be time to update my aging desktop.

I seem to remember saying the same thing about... well... lets just say "a long time ago..." when IBM went with the Intel 8086/8088 rather than Motorola 68000...

I say 1 day after Apple releases their Intel Mac (IMAC, with captial I), we'll see people figuring out how to run OS X 1.5 (or whatever the new version) on any generic x86 or x86_64 PC!
