I have finally managed to get to the setup/configure pages of myth and it looks fantastic. So now I turn to setting up the AverMedia 771 DVB-T card for use in the UK. I have found this gem:

Quote:
To set up your AverMedia 771 DVB-T card (and maybe others), when mythtv-setup starts, to switch to a console screen with <CTRL><ALT><F1> , log in as root, and type -

modprobe dvb-bt8xx
echo dvb-bt8xx >> /etc/modules

Now <ALT><7> back to the mythtv-setup screen and your DVB card should be visible

so, newbie question: where can I find out which numbers to put in place of those two xx 's ?? :D

There are no numbers. Just follow the directions.

There are so many things which appear to be simple, but I cant get to work. The tv capture card is not showing in the capture card setup page - next to card type it says Recompile with DVB-Support. Mod probe doesnt find anything.

I have to restart a couple of times (in fact many many times) now. One of the more confusing messages says that the backend can not be reached - and then I am stuck with a message on the screen I cant do anything about. Whilst I have accepted defaults for anything ip/dhcp/whateverthefuck whenever prompted.

It took me three hours today to trace a problem to the bios displaying the agp and not pci video out. I am nowhere near as smart as you gusy and I am pretty stressed out now. At this rate the box will be flying out onto the street real soon.

It's nearly half two in the morning now and I have been trying to get this to work pretty much all day since seven this morning. just what am I doing wrong?! I dont even know anymore. I am going to bed.

If anyone can help, perhaps the kindest and most humane way would be to contact me on msc messenger mulholland_john@hotmail.com.

My setup is as follows:
1.1 Celeron
512 ram
Aver DVB-T 771 (I am in the UK)
Nvidia MX4000
60gb internal hd
(I also have a 120gb external hd that I would like to use as well but has stuff on at the moment)

I really hope someone can help because I desperately want to show off some of what linux can do to my friends and family. I am not bad with computers - I used dos years ago and loved it, but I am almost completely lost in linux. If you can help, please do.

thanks,
john

John, what version of KnoppMyth are you using?

The messages "Recompile with DVB support" and "cannot find module" means that it is very old. Probably R4?

Try KnoppMyth R5A16.

ok, silly me - was using an old version - not sure which I mirror I downloaded that of in error. Well now after only one dodgy burn am now running 16 :D

I have done the above step - and the terminal came back with Zarlink MT352 which now shops up in the capture card setup page - so I think that is all cool. The Zarlink is the front end for the aver card right?

Thanks all for your patience and guidance - it is much appreciated.

That means that the data source is waiting for input. Alt-TAB to get to the xterm and answer the questions it asks you.
