I have been getting the same kernel panic as some others.

I have tried the various suggestions with no success. It is clear that LILO is installed and working, just that it doesn't have support for my particular SATA interface (chip?)

The Knoppmyth failsafe install finds the disks and (using manual) installs (seemingly) OK.

The boot error message indicates an inability to address the disk drive at the LILO stage.

Mandrake linux fares even worse - it cannot find any disks to install onto. Mandrake uses Lilo.

However, Ubuntu linux installs and boots just fine. It uses GRUB.


Data:
LILO fails with the same type of error (failure to find my SATA drives) on two linuxes.
GRUB works and continues to boot.
Knoppix (installer) talks to my disk.

Conclusion:
LILO (or at least the version in Knoppix) cannot handle my SATA drives (even though it can support SATAs on some motherboards that possibly use different interface chips).

Plan:
Switch to using GRUB.

Problem:
I cannot get grub working.

I tried copying files from ubuntu:/boot to knoppix:/boot and running grub-install (hd0), but I seem to get bits of Ubuntu loading from the Knoppix disk and the windows manager won't open.

So I've obviously grubbed about wrongly.

Anyone with GRUB experience ???
