Hi,

I'd like to set up a desktop box as a television server to stream live tv to my laptop (currently a windows PC, but I may buy a mac sometime soon). I have a fair amount of experience with Linux and none with MythTV or KnoppMyth.

I have a PIII box with 512MB ram and a clean hard drive for this project. I do not yet have a TV tuner. Both the server and laptop will be set up on a university network, so bandwidth is not an issue.

My main questions are:

1) Can this be done? I can't seem to find any documentation on getting MythTV to stream live television. Also, I'm not sure how a Windows or Mac computer would pull streams/change channels on the server.
2) Which TV tuner should I buy?
3) Can a PIII support this type of setup?

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

1. Yes
2. Any Hauppuage MPEG-2 based tuner.
3. Should be unless.

There are ways to use Windows has a frontend. As I've no interest in Windows, I cannot point you to a link. Check the MythTV archives.

I can't help with Windows either (though there are some clients that talk to a MythTV backend), but if you ever get a Mac, you run MythFrontend.app and it all works fairly well.

How can I set up streaming for live tv? I'm not really interested in setting up a PVR - i'm going for something more like a slingbox.

Thanks for the help.

you can stream right from a pvr card with vlc

Hi,

Using vlc across samba works very nicely for playing links from the /myth/pretty directory also. That way you can record a show and later watch it at your lesiure.
