Hi all,

Firs time i install knoppmyth and have some problems with the configuration part.

I have a PRV-350. i get to the question where i can choose to use it as TV out. (YES). All other hardware is also found by the auto install.

on part 5. should i be able to search for channels? it simply says no tuner found.... does it require a reboot for the tuner to be starrted?

on part 3. when i think i have configured the programlisting i of course exit that screen.... i see a thingie saying that 50% is done... and there it sits. No keys work to abort that. only cure i found is the hard reboot button... and then X can't start... probably because i havn't plugged in the TV.

Please enlighten me..

I'm newbie to knoppmyth but know my ways around the Linux part.

Hi,

I would suggest because of your using a pvr-350 card to use R5C7. There have been some problems with the tv out in D1 that is being elusive.

The R5C7 had only one small tweak needed to give a good stable box so search for the "log rotate" threads. Later, you can upgrade if you want. I still have a machine running R5A26

The R5D1 works fine with the 350, just don't try tv out.

Please contact me if you would like my assistance on providing debugging information on the pvr-350 with R5D1. I have a PVR-350 and tv-out works great so long as I dont reboot after the install. As soon as I reboot I find that the ivtv_fb module is causing some issues. Even to getting a segment fault when I try to manually load it. After that I get excessive processor usage that does not show up when I run "top". I am also not able to manually unload the module and the machine gets progressively slower to the point that nothing seems to work at all.

Resting my case. New folks have enough of a learning curve without having problems that are slightly above the knowledge level of beginner.
I consider myself slightly above beginner, (but only a little) and use the tv out on the 350 card. I have to use R5C7 or earlier versions to obtain that feature.
Tip, don't select bootsplash with R5C7 when doing setup. Adds a headache, but a curable headache.

Well, tryed the R5C7 but i still have the problems that myth cant find the Tuner on the card.. should i choose tuner 1 as input on a 350? i have tried a few different but it doesnt work. I get the remote control to work though =).

When i reboot X tries to start a few times and eventually says that it cant and will continue in text mode... is this because i choosed tv out on my card?

I'm starting to think there is something wrong with my card.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Since I don't know what your video card is, or anything else for that matter, suggest doing an edit of xf86config-4 file
Do alt F2 to obtain a console or ssh in from a M$ machine and become root.

#nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Several pieces missing, did you select boot splash and tv out? if so change fb0 to = fb1
then do the Exit testing..

or
search down the file till you see the area for the video Driver "something" the something may refer to nv, ati, i810, and try using "vesa"
for now, it is a generic driver but will work ok for now.
Driver "vesa"

Save the file then do Exit testing:

Exit testing
# killall gdm
# startx if the gray desktop comes up, then smile and do ctl c
# gdm to restart KM desktop for real.

Once the desktop is up, do alt s and the (2)capture card should be pvr x50 choice, tuner 0 or tuner1 what ever is the lowest available. It is what is use on the first start up.

Then go to (5) editor and ensure there is a valid channel, if you don't have a listing make one for channel 3 with a freq id of 3. Use that to make a connection in the (4)inputs set tuner to be what ever your RF source is and channel 3.

Any future help, will require a little more details from you, other wise it a guess as to which path to go. Most of this part of the information has been covered many times, also check out the wiki that Xsecrets has,look at tjc & some of my posts.

if you have a lot of channels to load, it takes awhile. for me with satellite, it takes about 15 min (if i'm thinking of the same step you are referring to). let it run, grab some dinner and a beer, then come back. hit an arrown key before you leave so you know when it's done (once it's done, the cursor will move).

Sorry guys,

I cant get this to work at all.

Still the same problems. The card seem to work but i cant get any tv listings and i cant search for channels..... now i'm actually thinking on putting it in a windows box to try out.. but i have another box i can mess around with first.

a bit long maybe but it should cover your needs to help me.

issues i have.

The channel searcher cant find my card. tuner0 is the most promising option to use i fuigured.

the channel database doesn't complete loading. it just hangs. (i have waited a loong time for it to finish but when top shows no cpu usage at all and my router doesn' tshow any network usage i get a bit worried)

Hi pompafrittes,

Please let me repeat myself... If you are using the pvr-350 card I strongly recommend the R5C7 version of KnoppMyth. The R5D1 has a problem dealing with the 350 card and will not work to have tv out (At least I haven't made it work) If you plan to have tv out, do not use bootsplash. You won't see it anyway as it only shows during boot up and during that time there is no tv out.

That said, looking through the messages, it looks as if you are not in the USA as I see "pal". I don't know the details for the pal part of world so hopefully those that do, will chime in for you. I do see the card what looks to be properly identified and the tuner set also.

Do an lspci and the look for the video card address should something like "0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible" basicly you want to mark down your numbers as I highlighted. This is for the video card you are using on your monitor.

It appears to be a Dell, 666mhz 1 gig mem (only need 256) 250gig hd. Audio may have to be manually set with alsaconf and then a modprobe to have it work on each boot up. Nothing major to setup just make notes of the snd-____ for later.

Also I have seen with some Dell 's that even if it has properly seen your video card, it gets dumb and will use the onboard video. Again an easy fix and you will see an error of xserver not starting.

With an install of R5C7 you should have little trouble getting the tuner to work. Be sure to go through every set up step with the sequence 12354 (You need a channel before you can assign one) I generally make a channel 1 with a freq id of 1 and give it the name of Video. That is to be connected to the video in step 4. In pal, I don't know but would suspect there is some unused channel for your vcr or something that could be used?

If you choose tv out, be double sure to do the complete setup first as it may be hard to see the fine print on a tv.

Take it one step at a time, and we will try to work through each difficulty as they come up.

As for the listings, someone from pal land will have to help you. You can manually add a RF channel and assign it to the tuner to get started.

You should be able to get control over your machine with a ctl F2 (no desktop) or ctl alt F2 (desktop working) so you can login to fix stuff.

Don't know if this helps.. but I'd been using R5C7 for VCR grabbing using a PVR 350 and TV out.. this was great.. did the R5D1 upgrade and ran into the problems documented above!!

I seem to have fixed these though by following the thread here:

I'm in the UK so I use PAL.. I got my old XF86Config back and it worked perfectly after I'd followed the various commands in the post.. it's the 0.7.1 ivtv drivers that seem important..
