Ok, guys, first I will apologize in advance.
I've done a search and cannot find any posts that give me a clue.
Boots and goes through the initial config (timezone, user, admin, etc).
Gets to the "Do you want to proceed with these parameters?"
It automatically drops to the console with an error in KnoppMyth-auto line 609 "1000000: syntax error: operand expected (erro token is "/ 1000000"
Ok, a little background may be in order:
I am very technical, having been in IT for 20 years, and have field-stripped and built many many computers. However, my knowldege of Linux is not great, and its been 8 years or so since I've touched it. (you did note my advance-apologies above, right?)
I am repurposing a 2gz system that I've been using as an XP system for my kids. It has gig of memory, Radeon 9600 Pro, and a ATI WinTV650. It has 80gig drives formatted to FAT32. If that is the issue, then you have my apologies and I'll hit myself in the head with a hammer. Just tell me what to do to correct and I'll try to remedy.
Now, if you can help with this question, I have a couple more.
- I would realy like to get MythTV going. I would also like to be able to use the system as a NAS. On Black Friday, I pickued up three 250 gig drives that I would like to drop into the system. I also have a 500 gig external USB drive that I'd like to add. I download movies, and being able to drop all my video on one box would be great. It woudl also allow me to use it for extgernal data storage. I would be accessing it from across the network from a couple of XP systems. Can this be done?
- One better, can I load VMWare to run XP as a VM that will allow my kids to continue to use it to surf the net, run Word, check email and other relatviley light-weight tasks?
Thanks one and all,
Pete

If the drive you're trying to install to is a SATA drive you need to do a manual install, if it's an IDE PATA drive it needs to be the primary master device. Double check where your BIOS sees the drive and make sure this is the case. You may need to correct the jumpering (MA/SL/CS) or CS cabling for the drive.

I removed the drive that was on the same cable as slave. All that I have in the machine now is an 80gig IDE drive set to Primary master (it is on the cable alone), and the CDrom on the second IDE channel as the Secondary Master.
No SATA drive, nothing else.
The BIOS does see the drive (and the CD) correctly. On the 'Boot' page, I have only the CD enabled so that it forces the system to boot from the CD, which it does.
On boot, it says that it is
'Enabling DMA accelration fro: hde [MAXTOR 5L080S4]' so it seems to be seeing it. However, is 'hde' correct? If not, I am not sure why it woudl be doing so.
It does say that the video is "unknown', could that be a factor?
Any other thoughts, oh wise ones?
Thanks in advance,
Pete

OK, figured it out
The hint was that hde instead of hda. I did some searching on *that* and found a thread that talked about RAID. I don't have RAID implemented on my system, though I once did, a couple of years ago.
The RAID was still turned on, on my motherboard.
Once I disabled RAID on the mother, it is installing.
Thanks guys
Pete

Good work! You are hereby granted the coveted title of "clue snatcher" (an honor reserved for those who demonstrate the ability to take a clue and run with it).
