Hi,

I don't see (or recall) where or why you are going for the manual install.... Just pick a drive and do auto install. Experiment once you get your first box up and performing so you have a reference to look at for ideas :)

How to do a manual install and install lilo has been covered several times in previous forum posts.

I had this problems also, lilo from the knoppix cd would not install over grub. So I booted off a livecd and mounted the drive;
># mount /dev/hda /mnt
cdroot to the disk
># chroot /mnt
made a grub directory
># mkdir /boot/grub
installed grub
># grub-install hd0
># update-grub
if grub-install has problems, copy the /boot/grub directory form a different machine, then run update-grub.
Now grub will boot the disk.

The box I was trying out has a DVD drive on hda and CR-RW on hdb with the HDD on hde, as it's connected to an ATA-100 Host adaptor. So for some reason the automatic install doesn't identify the HDD for the repartition/actual install, even though earlier on it had identified the drive for the partition sizes.
