Hi pudding,

Normally, hd connects to ide1 on mother and uses the last connector on cable.

Man, jumpers always mess me up. :?

I've got two IDE cables going to the motherboard. One goes to the optical drive, and the other to the hard drive. I switched the connections to the motherboard based on what you said (and made the hard drive master instead of cable select), and now it's showing the optical drive as hda, and the hard drive as hdc.

I went into the BIOS, and it's saying that my "primary master" is the optical drive, and "secondary master" is my hard drive. Do these need to be switched? If so, do I do that in the BIOS, or some other way?

Thanks for all of the help - can't wait to get this running! :D

BTW, my name's Mike, too. ;)

Hi,
Switch the cables back at the mobo, and you should be good to go. If not, try the other connector at the drive end.

Usually,
ide 1 is hda & hdb
ide2 is hdc & hdd

Just rearrange the the cables until you get the hd as hda then auto install should work.

Have a great day!
Mike

To put my two cents in...

- Your motherboard normally has two IDE connectors labelled either 0 and 1 (or more rarely) 1 and 2. I'll use the 0/1 naming below.

- Your IDE cable normally has two connectors close together for the drives and one further away for the board. (These are actually supposed to be color coded, see the link below).

- With the drives jumpered for CS and a CS cable the Linux drive naming goes like this:

Mobo end------------SL--------MA
IDE 0 ]========[hdb]===[hda]

IDE 1 ]========[hdd]===[hdc]

Note that even if you have to jumper MA/SL for some reason, you should still follow this connection plan to avoid confusion. Either way the master drive on IDE0 (aka your primary ide master) will be hda, and the slave drive (if any) will be hdb. When there's only one drive on a cable it should be on the end connector for electrical reasons.

Awesome! Thank you both so much...after reading the link you posted, tjc, and checking out my IDE cables, I realized that one of them was very old. After replacing it with a new one, setting both drives as Cable Select, and making sure the hard drive was connected to the primary IDE, all is well now.

It didn't like my NVidia card, and although I had connected the network cable, it couldn't resolve download.nvidia.com to download the appropriate drivers. So, it failed with that, then refused to start Gnome.

Rebooted, switched to the BIOS, changed the video from PCI to AGP, save and exit, and Knoppix booted fine. :D

I hope this helps someone else, if they run into the same problems I have.

So far, so good, except MythTV is having a hard time with my PVR-150. Is this the proper forum to ask about that, and if so, should I create a new thread?

Hi pudding,

tjc deserves the credit, I just push his start button and he elequently helps resolve most issues :)

I would think that you have two new threads, one for the 150 and one for the nvidia.
Quote:
couldn't resolve download.nvidia.com
is a normal message as you don't have an ip at that point. The solution to the nividia is probably as simple as editing the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and changing the driver to be nvidia. It is probably now what ever your mobo video was id as. The nvidia may make the difference of being able to watch tv or not. vesa will work with most to get started.

If you want to retry the nvidia, I have a couple tricks to save work and reboots.

Good to hear you are making progress!

:D

I figured out how to get MythTV working with my Hauppage PVR-150 card. I was originally trying to follow this tutorial, but it didn't work right for me. I just couldn't get ivtv to work correctly.

So, yesterday, after reinstalling KnoppMyth, when it came time to configure MythTV, I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu tutorial:

Quote:
So at this point you'll be in the full screen menu for setting up the myth backend stuff. Go through 'General' (if you don't the setup program will not generate an essential configuration file!!) – you should be able to figure out the right settings there. If not – there's always the MythTV documentation. FWIW, I didn't have to change anything in 'General' on the first run though.

After you get back to the main menu select 'Capture Cards'. Then follow these menus and settings:

New capture card
Card type: MPEG-2 Encoder Card
Video device: /dev/video0
Default input: Tuner0
Finish

Now 'Esc' back out to the main menu. Go down and select 'Video Sources'. Then follow these menus and settings:

New video source
Video source name: PVR-150-1
XMLTV listings grabber: NorthAmerica (DataDirect)
User ID: [whatever user ID you created at the Zap2it Labs site]
Password: [whatever password you created at the Zap2it Labs site]

Now select 'Retrieve Lineups' – it may take a minute, but it should grab the TV listings you signed up for. If not – make sure you have everything put in correct for account settings. Select 'Finish' and then 'Esc' back out to the main menu. Select 'Input' and then follow these menus and settings:

Select 'Tuner0'
Video Source, should be set to: PVR-150-1
Finish

After that, it worked fine! I'm now a (very) happy user of KnoppMyth. Thank you so much for all of the help!! :D

MythWeb rocks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I don't even need to mess with SMB to grab the shows over my LAN, MythWeb has it integrated into the interface. Awesome.

Although everything seems to be running well, I'd love to shift some of the weight over to the NVidia card. Should I just start a new thread, asking how to get the NVidia card to work, and you'll reply? I mean, whatever works, by this point I'm considering it an "extra" simply because I've got all that I wanted, and then some. :D

Again, thank you...I've been messing around with this since before January, it's so gratifying to have it working (and so well, at that!).
