Why is it when I try to add a package through Synaptic it wants to uninstall a long list of programs? I picked about 3 or 4 different packages one at a time and Synaptic warned it was going to uninstall packages, what gives?

Synaptic is just a frontend to apt-get. If you search the forums for apt-get you'll find that it is fairly dangerous at the moment.

Yes, please DONT do that package managing with that synaptics packet manager.

It totally screws up the system since it tends to get rid of something that is needed for at least X to work.

Tried it, had to reinstall the whole thing...
Wondering why it even exists if one cannot really us it safely...
Smart fellow could if knowing for shure what he/she is doing but most of us dont

The first time around that I installed Knoppmyth I went ahead and used it and had catastrophe on my hands afterwards. This time I knew better but was wondering why it was trying to do it.

I also had a problem with my time zone and time setup. My program guide was always off. I used the tzconfig and change it to UTC and blew out my video source settings and started the settings over. I then redid the mythfilldatabase. I finally gave up and reformatted and started with a fresh install again. That cleared up my time problem.

To be fair, Synaptic DOES give you the option of seeing which packages it's about to install/uninstall
before you go ahead with the changes. Thus, some research might prevent aforementioned catastrophes.
