I have installed the newet version using the auto install option and everything installed fine. I removed the CD set the bios to boot off the hdd that has knoppmyth on it and restarted the computer. The system went through the whole dialog including beeping at me then it came to the nVidia part and it installed the drivers. It then did some more stuff and all the sudden it stopped and everything went black. Even my monitor went to power save mode and the hdd light stopped blinking. I looked around the forums a little and found that some usb mice and keyboards make it mad at you... so i un plugged them and the same thing happened again. I even left it sitting alone with that black screen for like 20 mins to see what would happen and it never cleared that part.

My system specs are...
Intel P4 3.06
1Gb RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5600 Ultra
Happauge 350
MSI 865 PE Neo2-P
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Seagate 160Gb Drive
DVD burner
DVD player

Please help me

Thanks,
Alex.

Sounds like the X configuration... Are you using TV out? Have you tried flipping to an alternate console using the (Ctrl-Alt-F1) sequence? If that gets you a text login prompt you're on the road. Otherwise you may need to boot off the CD in rescue mode or the HD in single user mode so that you can disable GDM until you can fix the X config.

See this troubleshooting page on the wiki - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... terInstall

OBTW - Sometimes you can also get it working by redoing the install with the "expert tv testcd" options (Ok, you don't really need testcd but it's worth checking while we're there.) When prompted change the X configuration. Set the HorizSync range to 30 - 50, the VertRefresh range to 60 - 60, the resolutions to 800x600 and 640x480 only (uncheck 1024x768), the color depth to 24 bits, ... and I forget what all else. Save and exit, then continue with the install.

There's a also a sample /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 which works better for some people on the wiki - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... X5200HowTo

Well you didn't mention you were using DVI to us either... ;-)

Have you checked to see if the latest nvidia drivers have support for this?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8762.html
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=UpdateNvidiaDrivers

Upgrading is easy and should relatively painless for someone who has demonstrated that they've got a well stocked bag of clues. There are only two things to watch out for.

- The helper script in /usr/local/bin only works for versions up through 8178 because nvidia changed the way they were packaging things.

- Once you find a version that works, you'll need to disable the magic "upgrade" script that will try to reinstall 7174 everytime you reboot. Searching for an article titled something like "latest nvidia drivers 9999" or "nvidia drvers 9999 released" (probably under hardware) should turn up the instructions.
