I'm building a knoppmyth machine and I get an error during the knoppix installation that says, my autodetection appears to hang, the next line is about alsa sound (appears to say alsa is ok). Install is very slow. The installation does finish after 45 minutes I'm sure. Boot after install is still slow another 45 minutes.

i have a pentium d proccessor 805 with a micro atx ecs p4m800pro-m motherboard(was on sale @ frys on aug 25 2006)
embedded nic card,
2 1 gig dimms of pc3200 memory
1 hauppage 350 tuner
an antec nsk 2400

Hi,

Does sound a little sluggish. Try rebooting with the install cd and use the boot: knoppmyth testcd to be sure what you installed with was a good burn. You can hit reset once it makes it through all the tests, assuming they check ok.

There is a couple minute lag if there isn't any network attached and you have set dhcp. It has to wait for the dhcp request to time out before boot can continue.

Thank u for yuor answer,
I very sorry my miss read. The bios was not hung. The error read the "auto detection seems to hang, check your bios." I removed 1gig of the 2gig of ddr I had installed. I swapped each dimm between the two ddr slots and found the system ok with 1gig in the 1st ddr slot; so I'm leaving it as is (1 gig in the ddr slot closest to the edge of the board and no dimms in the 1 ddr or 2 ddr2 slots.
The total knoppmyth system now freezes after watching TV briefly (15 or 20 minutes) , so I reinstalled knopmyth 3 times. After each install, watching tv caused the system to freeze. After this last install my r5d1 has been running 24 hours now, it recorded one program and 6 others are pending. I would love to be able to watch tv thru this unit but need help

I personally won't trust an ECS motherboard from Fry's if the president himself purchased it for me.... Boot off the CD and type memtest at the boot prompt. Let it run for a few hours...

Hi Ces
this is a great thing you have here. knoppmyth keeps me busy, out of trouble and i'm learning fun stuff. I will install both memory dimms and run memtest, after i record these pending programs and make dvds of them for the wife.

Hi,

Use the memory sticks for something major, maybe a video editor or simular. I only use 256meg and do not have any issues with KnoppMyth. run the mem test as Cesman suggested as that way you will know they are good.

Hi mjl
I'm using the hauppage 350 tuner, & after checking the forum, I have the same problem you and others have. I reboot or restart & Xserver can't be found. So I'll go back to r5c7 or r5c30.2. I was further along with either one of these versions than with d1. As I said earlier d1 freezes while watching tv for less than 30min. on 30.2 or c7 only the video would freeze & I could exit out of the freeze (apllication locking up? maybe) with the remote and start watching again. If I recall correctly, I was able to continue watching tv as long as I changed the channel every 15 or 20 minutes. with d1 the OS seems to freeze and I could only hard reset or boot. I know guys seem to be getting to your command prompt, I could not.

Thanks mjl

Hi,
Until the 350 tv part is tweaked it may be best to drop back.Either A30 or C7 were fine with the 350 card.

Your freezing issue could very well be a memory problem. I am not familiar with the video on your system board, if it is agp type there was a setting suggestion at bios level for that.

Do as cesman suggested, run the memory test, let it run over night, there should be no errors!
