Has anyone tried installing KnoppMyth on a Mac? With BootCamp and rEFIt this should be possible. I'm trying to get a USB disk to be wiped and installed/booted from. I need a full frontend and backend setup running with a HDHomeRun for the tuner. -Nathan |

Hi Nathan, Did you try this yet? I'm also interested in KnoppMyth on a Mac Mini. I've been somewhat frustrated with HD image quality issues on the Mac OS X frontend. I've toyed with the idea of netbooting the Mini. But my backend is really stable and I'm paranoid about changing it to allow for netboot support. |

it should be feasible, as I own a ubuntu disc for mac intels so knoppmyth may work with it, maybe witht the help of some porting or recompiling |

Unfortunately, I abandoned this approach. Compiling the OSX frontend from SVN with XCode seems to work fine. <rant> What MythTV really needs is a cheap HD extender. I love MythTV, but HD extenders with complete functionality require at least a $800 PC right now with all the problems a PC has. From my experiments so far, netboot seems the way to go. SageTV is promising an HD extender in Q2 of this year... priced around $180. If they can pull this off similar to their almost perfect MVP interface, then it will be the best deal in town (even with all the software licensing costs). It would allow you to setup a very cheap backend (low CPU power with lots of storage) that you put in a closet. And then buy a bunch of cheap, low-power and silent HD frontends. This is exactly what I have been trying to do... with little success in finding an affordable solution. </rant> |

Most uPnP media extenders should work with recent MythTV backends. I haven't found them cheap enough on eBay yet to test, but a HD-capable gizmo like a DLink DSM-520 or a NetGear EVA5000 should just work? Of course, if you mean really cheap, you will have to wait a few years. The market is probably too small right now. |

Unfortunately, those UPnP devices don't have the MythTV interface. No live tv, etc... I'm looking for something with the full interface... skins and all. The only way I know of to get this with MythTV is to build up a PC frontend box. SageTV has the exact same interface on the MVP as on your media PC and the HD extender is rumored do the same. I have long envisioned an extender box with VNC client for the frontend interface... switching over to the video stream when necessary. However, only SageTV has implemented something like this. GB-PVR has a MVP interface which is similar to Sage's but not as refined. I really like MythTV and wish there was a HD extender solution like I mention above. |
