Post subject:  Need to upgrade Samba

I am trying to use rsync to copy files to my Knoppmyth box over Samba, but the version of Samba from Debian Sarge that Knoppmyth uses has a bug that makes it not work. Here is info about the bug if you're curious:

At any rate, I need to upgrade to the latest version of Samba to fix it, but I'm afraid to kill my Knoppmyth installation by messing around apt sources and whatnot. There are backports available here:

http://backports.org/debian/pool/main/s/samba/

Would it be OK to just grab Samba from there and try to install the deb file or will that break my system? If so, which file do I need to get?

Don't know about upgrading Samba, but do you have to rsync to a Samba share?

Maybe I am being naive about Cygwin, but can't you just rsync to the KnoppMyth box directly over the network? (i.e. not rsync locally to the Samba share that is mounted on youw WinDo$e box)

I just did this from my Mac to a KnoppMyth box:
Code:
% rsync -a --verbose --dry-run /var/tmp nigel@viking:/home/nigel/tmp
Password:
building file list ... done
tmp/4549cd867cd1c
tmp/455eea1c9707a
tmp/45642a186a47d
tmp/com.apple.speech.synthesis.globals
tmp/folders.505/TemporaryItems/Acr15478493.tmp
tmp/folders.505/TemporaryItems/Acr15489573.tmp
tmp/folders.505/TemporaryItems/cache.lck
tmp/mds/505/mds.lock
tmp/mds/505/mdsDirectory.db
tmp/mds/505/mdsObject.db
tmp/mds/system/mds.install.lock
tmp/mds/system/mds.lock
tmp/mds/system/mdsDirectory.db
tmp/mds/system/mdsObject.db

Not a bad idea at all. No permissions problems this time, but now rsync butchers non-ASCII filenames on the destination. For instance

Code:
Ænima

becomes

Code:
_nima

:(

Post subject:  Try Microsoft Services for Unix

I am not sure what windows OS you are running, but you could try using Microsoft Services for Unix v 3.5. It should be a free download from microsoft, just Google it and you should find it. This will allow you to setup a NFS share on your windows PC. I currently run it on Windows Server 2000 at home (I am a Windows Engineer by trade).
