Is 8 GB enough to install KnoppMyth as a frontend and Motion? If not, how much space do I need?

I'd say it depends on how much "motion" you intend to archive. As an auto install will 5 gigs for root, I'd recommend a manual install and only create one big partition w/ no swap.

Well, I'd still have a small swap - no matter what. But if the storage is "elsewhere" then a manual install on 8GB would do for a front-end only system.

I don't know much about motion, but I have a FE only install on a 6GB hard drive with everything stored on another combined FE/BE system. I went the manual instal route, created a 5.3GB root partition and a 768MB swap partition. I have 2.5GB used on root, so it's less than half full.

Hi,
I have put KM on a 4.3 gig w/out issue. 384meg swap, manual installed so I could control swap. Only task I can't do is watch much tv :)

Motion can be setup to be very lean and if you purge the files using cron you should be able to setup a long running balence. There is a thread here on the forum that has a few ideas that work well and tjc provided a means of keeping things tidy. I put the motion files into the /myth/gallery/motion so they show up in the gallery viewer.

An old bttv, osprey or simular works well if that is your main goal of motion. The x50's requires special setup.

You do need to use C7, D1 for the easiest motion setup experience.

Thanks. All the Motion pictures and/or video will be stored on an 80 GB hard drive in the network (the Myth backend's 2nd hard drive; it will have a 250 GB hard drive for MythTV). I'm planning on buying cheap $30 computers from eBay to use as Myth frontends for all the TVs in my house, and buying cheap $5 webcams and microphones to use as surveillance cameras with Motion on all of them (kinda reminds me of the telescreens in 1984 lol). Also, I'm planning on buying another cheap computer and webcam with a microphone I own and cheap $3 speakers and putting them by a window next to my front door. Then I'm going to make an AIM screen name and set it to always accept Talk invitations and have it always signed on. I'll also install a voice changer on my laptop which I have AIM on to make me sound like Darth Vader or something. Then, whenever someone rings the doorbell, I'll initiate a Talk session and ask the person who they are and why they're there (they won't be able to see the webcam, mic, or speakers). I might do something like that with all my frontends also, to make an intercom thingy. Also, I'll probably buy $4 dummy security cameras to put near the frontends and the front door, so people know they're being watched, but not by what, unless they see the webcam that's actually recording them. Also, I'm just wondering, would it be possible and/or practical to use a solar panel to power a Myth backend? (I live near D.C. and I won't overclock the processor)

All it takes is a few $$$$ and many things are possible. Figure how much power is needed, battery size to hold it for x amount of time then see what is available for cells to do a recharge while still keeping it running. An EPIA mobo runs pretty lean using a laptop hard drive. Also there are dc to dc regulators for them and some accept wild input voltage swings and still work.

So how practical for investment cost? You may never see a break even but then again how much fuel would you save for others to use in years to come? (like for the kids)

can knoppmyth be installed on a 1GB hard drive, to be used for just mythstreamtv? if not i guess ill just install xubuntu with xine on the laptop i bought from ebay for $40 a few years ago cuz i was bored.

You could always just run off the CD, or have a network install.
