Linux noobe, last Solaris experience over 10+yrs ago.....just to set things straight... System Config: Asus A7V266-E w/AMD Athlon 1600+ XP 1 GB Kingston PC2100 DDR hda - Prim. mast. 20GB W.D. hdb - Prim. slave TDK DVDRW0404N hdc - Sec. mast. 80GB Maxtor Video mon. - ATI Radeon 7500 Vid. capture - ATI Wonder Pro Generic 1394 & USB D-Link 10/100 NIC Attempted 2 auto-installs: During CD boot had 1 error: Starting vdev Hot-Plug Hardware Detection - Failed After installation completed, removed CD and rebooted.... After POST system just hung....no HD activity Deleted all partitions and attempted to do a Manual Install When asked to partition hda, received the following error msg: Opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write: hit return and got Fatal Error: Cannot get disk size BIOS looks good and devices show proper during POST/boot Any advice would be welcome.. TIA |

Did you check the MD5sum? Did you install using the testcd option? Did you remove any extraneous USB/firewire stuff (i.e. anything besides keyboard and mouse)? |

psicard - thanks for the reply... Yeah, did the CDTEST and chkd the checksum....all good... thought about the USB and disabled that in BIOS along with the serial/parallel ports....I'll take out the firewire card now and see what that does |

Ok... Removed firewire card, disabled USB via bios, disabled most i/o ports except mouse/keyboard Strange that udev still finds firewire(not native on motherboard) and USB(although diabled) Still no luck with auto-install and same problem with manual install Might try burning a previous version to see where that gets me |

How far did the boot up get? Did you see LILO quickly appear, did it just stop there? Or did it continue past this then just stop? Bruce S. |

Hi Bruce, The boot only got as far as the POST screen and list of IRQ's....nothing after that....just a quick HD activity but then nothing..... |

Hi, Sounds a little like the jumper on the drive isn't set for master, cable isn't on first ide port, boot flag not toggled on.. Any or one gives issue simular. Mike |

Actually I removed both HD's and both CD/DVD's and reconfigured to match the "pamphlet" hda (W.D. 20GB)was set to Master on Primary channel, first connector on cable no Slave on Primary channel - removed CDrom drive hdb (Max. 80GB) was set to Master on Secondary channel, first connector hdc (TDK DVD R/W) was set to Slave on secondary channel BIOS reports same. This was just a Win2K Advanced Server that I decommisioned.....so I know the hardware is good |

Final follow-up post - Lessons Learned 1st. thank tjc for the wiki link...that lead me down a path where I learned a good deal of info.... !st. Lesson Learned - Just because a particular hardware configuration worked for one O/S doesn't mean it will work for another O/S!!!! The hw config listed in my first post worked perfectly fine for 4 yrs, 2 yrs as Win XP Pro and 2 yrs. as Win2K Avanced Server. The 2 harddrives we jumpered Master (WD 20GB) and Slave (Max 80GB) and were both on the primary channel. Using this config I was not able to successfully install Knoppmyth.... To get a good install I had to jumper the WD to Cable Select AND I had to physically remove the maxtor (more on that in a sec.) After the install the system booted with Lilo and on I went to the config... No matter what jumpering I used on the Maxtor (prim. slave, sec. master or sec. slave) I could not get a successful installation! Strangely enough, after getting it to install on the WD, I removed the drive and jumpered it to Master and then reinstalled the Maxtor and jumpered it to Slave...both on the primary channel....and the system booted up fine!! 2nd. Lesson Learned - Don't believe your BIOS settings! Having set in BIOS Plug-N-Play O/S = No... I noticed during bootup that the BIOS report after POST showed Plug-N-Play Initialized!!! I did a BIOS upgrade last night and it still showed the same thing. This is why I had to physically remove the Max. drive....even if I removed the drive via BIOS, udev would still find it....and my USB's too!!! I still don't know why udev found firewire after the card was removed from the system....the MB doesn't have native firewire support... Sorry for the long post...but hopefully someone else might find this useful. Cheers |

Don't feel too bad, you wouldn't believe the hardware problems I had with my first KM box. It took a BIOS upgrade which changed some default settings before my box was stable the first time. Then when adding the 2nd drive I managed to get a tiny crumb of aluminum in one of my memory slots which led to more intermitent flakiness. I literally had to tear the whole machine apart to find that one. |

Hi tjc....ah it's all part of the fun  now I just have to dig up some hd's that would be compatible...I have a parts place not too far from me and for < $50 I can pick up another WD or Maxtor drive...I think having the same manufacturer would at least help....I really like the idea behind the software and I'm looking forward to getting something built that works....and maybe learning some Linux on the way
