I am tring to configure a dual boot machine with Windows XP. I have a Intel DG965 motherboard and am using SATA drives.

I have configured knoppmyth to boot on one of the drives. I unplugged the SATA connection and configured XP on the other drive (now in the only SATA connection).

Going back to putting the knoppmyth drive in SATA0, and the XP drive in SATA1, the bios recognizes both.

The only way I can ever get linux to boot is if I configure my SATA drives as AHCI in the bios (rather than IDE), this according to intel. So far, so good.

If I do a fdisk -l, linux see the secondary XP drive as /dev/sdb1 with an NTFS partition.

I edit lilo.conf to add:

other=/dev/sdb1
label=WindowsXP
table=/dev/sdb

Then I execute /sbin/lilo -v

When I reboot, and choose my winxp option, it just says booting winxp and hangs.

Any ideas?

The problem might me that XP doesn't know it's on the secondary drive, its boot manager will be saying drive(0) when it's drive(1).
What I would recommend is swapping your drives around, therefore having the XP drive first.
Then writing lilo to the MBR of the boot disk, but do not use the auto install, I don't think the auto install takes account of the dual boot situation. Having it set up this way is more like a standard multiboot scenario.
