Post subject:  xorg.conf resets on reboot

Hello all,

I am trying to configure my xorg.conf file for a new ( to me ) 30" HDTV. I am using the guide located here http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/mythhd.php. However, whenever I make changes to the file and reboot, it gets reset to the auto-generated file by mkxf86config.

How do I prevent this from happening?

Thanks for the help once again...
~eric

It's weird...from all the googling I've done, I still can't find an answer. Maybe my google skills aren't as up to par as I thought. :?

Are you installing a nonstandard version of the nvidia X driver? There's a boot script that tends to revert to a canonical version which needs to be disabled. See the wiki page here:

Thank you for the link.

I learned a new command...chattr. I just typed chattr -i xorg.conf, and it solved the problem. Now whatever script was changing my file can't anymore because it doesn't have permission to.

Also, Jarod's xorg.conf file worked for me in 540p mode. I just have to tweak it to prevent overscan now. I did notice, however, that it doesn't seem to have true color. The gradients on the mythtv menus jump color.

That is not really what I would call a good solution. It will almost certainly come back to bite you. You'd be better off fixing the problem at the source. If it is reverting the driver to the default as tjc suggested you'll just end up with symptoms popping up in a different place next time you reboot.

Code:
update-rc.d -f install-nvidia-debian remove
