Hi all,

Summary:
I'm trying to get X to run at the native resolution (1680X1050) of my wide-screen monitor. But my integrated GFX card doesn't support this resolution.

Details:
I picked up an Acer X223WBD over Christmas. Very nice monitor for $200. Don't bother looking for info on this monitor, it's not even listed on Acer's website!

My mobo has an integrated Intel 865G chipset.

From my research I need to use the 915resolution utility to force the chipset to o/p at 1650X1080. I really don't know much about linux, I tried did my best to get this working by adding it to bootmisc.sh & deleting all modelines from xorg.conf and added the one referenced in the URL below (he has almost the identical monitor, luckily). This URL claims to give you all the info you need to get this to work but as I'm not even sure how to get 915resolution to run as a service so I'm kinda stuck.

So I guess just getting this util to startup in the 'proper' fashion would be a good start if anyone could help me with that. I notice that it is already installed with KM. Once I have it running properly I think I can handle the modelines side of things...

I'm surprised to get almost no hits on this util in this forum, I would have thought that many folks could make use of it.

Ok, made some progress.

1. Added "/usr/sbin/915resolution 52 1680 1050" to the end of /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh (this should patch mode 52 to be 1680x1050)

2. Edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows:

Now I boot and my monitor goes into power saving mode, yaaay. How is that progress? Well, if I vnc to the box I see a massive 1680X1050X24 screen (verified by clicking menu option "Connection Info").

If I didn't know better I might suspect that the monitor couldn't display this mode but it should be able to. Here's the entry from the user manual

Note that the msg I get on the monitor right before going into power saving mode is "No Signal"

BTW I am using the i810 driver in xorg.conf, which is a pre-req for all of this.

I had similar problems getting my HDTV to work. Adding the following to the Monitor section solved the problem

Just a clarification, check the manual for your set and make sure that the scan rates used are in range for your HDTV.

Those messages explain one of your problems: your virtual
screen size is 1024x768, and the mode you're requesting is
larger than the virtual size.

Try setting the virtual screen size larger like this:

Not sure if that was a typo or not (did you mean "Virtual 1650 1080"?) but you really want the virtual size to match the actual size otherwise you can end up with some very funky behavior. Older virtual window managers like FVWM used to use this type of thing to their advantage, but it doesn't play well with full screen apps like MythTV, where part of a menu might be hidden off the edge of a screen.

Thanks for all the feedback, excellent as ever. Still no joy however. Now I get zero errors in Xorg.0.log and only one warning that looks vaguely interesting - "(WW) I810(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum". I wonder is this caused by 915resolution.

Changed my monitor section slightly to set the refresh rates to what is correct for this monitor.

Still boots with a turned-off monitor but looks good in VNC :-( Bummer. I am sensing that I'm at the end-game point. A friend suggested I toss in an nVidia FX5200 card that I have unused here, might have to do that, but not certain if I'll be able to manage that any better!

Try increasing the verbosity of the X logging as described here to see if your monitor is reporting any EDID modelines that you could try:

You mentioned to look for modelines reported by my monitor. Note that, as mentioned earlier, I built the modeline from this entry:

Looks like you Intel onboard/chipset graphics can't do that... Maybe that utlity that you mentioned can force it to obey, but for now it's not going to do anything over 1280x1024@75Hz.

Y'know that was a thought of mine from the beginning, that is, surely I can't assume that the chipset can do any res I feel like. But as it can manage much higher resolutions and in my many googles I had never come across anyone having any problem getting their various widescreen resolutions to work (when using 915resolution) I figured it must be ok.

Ok, whatever, time to research the possibility of using my FX5200 card for this.

Here's a thought: I think you're running 915resolution twice.

My KnoppMyth auto-install installed the 915resolution as part of the Debian rc.d init scripts. Check out /usr/share/doc/915resolution for details, but basically you edit /etc/default/915resolution and put your parameters in there.

Ah yes, you are running your command in single user mode, and then it is run again when you go to runlevel 5 but without the proper parameters. (It's run via /etc/init.d/915resolution by /etc/rc5.d/S20915resolution .) Sounds like a potential problem, but really I don't know if it's a problem or not.

My /etc/default/915resolution :

I don't know if this matters, but I chose the 16-bit mode to replace (even though it seems to replace all bit depths with your resolution) and am running in 16-bit mode. You changed the 32-bit mode.

If you want to duplicate what I did, try replacing a 16-bit mode (as located by 915resolution -l ) and running X in 16-bit mode. And take 915resolution out of bootmisc.sh . Can't guarantee it'll work, but it's working for me on a 945GM chipset.

Thanks a lot for all the good info, I sense a new wiki entry in my future... But first I need to get it running.

So I commented out my line in bootmisc.sh, rebooted and it looks like 915resolution didn't run as when I do a '915resolution -l' I only get the standard modes.

Also, /etc/init.d/915resolution exists but /etc/rc5.d/S20915resolution does not so I guess this is why it is not running. Should I create a symlink of that name or something to get it running? This is the first time in my life I have ever ventured in to this dir.

I also edited /etc/default/915resolution with the parms I desire so I'm looking fwd to giving this another shot.

Hmm. The /etc/rc5.d/S20915resolution symlink existed for me on the auto-install. If it isn't there, the Debian (therefore KnoppMyth) way is to run

As you can see, my 1280x720 resolution is listed. This is using the /etc/default/915resolution file I gave above.

My original observation is moot, though. You weren't running 915resolution twice if you didn't have the rc.d symlink. However I don't know if running it in single user mode like you were doing changes anything. I doubt it, but since I have it working it's worth trying to emulate what I did. But then again I have a different chipset.

Quick Debian startup primer: Each service generally has a startup script in /etc/init.d that accepts at least the commands "start" "stop" and "restart". There are symlinks under /etc/rcX.d (where X is a runlevel) that tells Debian init which services to start and stop for each given runlevel. Levels 2-5 are normal multiuser runlevels; 5 is the default. 1 / S is the single user runlevel. 6 is reboot. You don't necessarily need to know that, but it helps to understand when you're reconfiguring them. More info at http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28 . In the case of configuration changing files like 915resolution and hdparm they aren't strictly services, but they still can respond to start and stop commands by applying and undoing their settings.
