I know, you gurus out there with working boxes and unlimited linux knowledge hate this one, but I've searched the forum read the posts here:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... hlight=dvd
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... t=play+dvd
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1739
and fail to find a successful solution anywhere. Maybe folks fix their issues then stop posting?
I've done all I think I should have to be able to play back dvds, but nothing happens. Running the dvd player command for mplayer from bash I get lots of "Can't open /.../mplayer/***.conf: No such file or directory" errors, and lastly
"libdvdread: can't stat %d"
"couldn't open dvd device: %d"
Please forgive the ignorance, I really have been searching the forum all morning. Can anyone help me figure out whats going on? Thanks for the patience.

This thread is a good starting point: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=337 You can make mplayer work, but it's menu support is seriously lacking. This seems to make certain DVDs unplayable. I switched over to xine myself, others like ogle, both work far better than mplayer for DVDs IMO.

Thanks TJC for the response...it helped me narrow things down. I finally fixed the problem by stripping the dvd play command to a bare minimum; "mplayer dvd:// /dvd" then adding switches till I got it where I wanted it. I got xine working the same way. I think the problem for me was the last switch in the command for mplayer that comes default with the install (-xv I think it is). After reading the man pages for mplayer I changed this to -x11 I think....I don't have the machine in front of me, but thought I'd throw this post out anyway to document the steps that got me the fix. If anyone wants my exact settings, for Hauppauge Wintv FM 401, send me a private message and I'll get them for you. DM
