Hi,

After having my Knoppmyth R5F1 box be almost irreversibly killed by the root partition filling up with logs that did not rotate properly, then killing the backend by using apt-get to install software after fixing the disk space issue, I realize that I need logwatch installed to better monitor this system.

I was able to do a backup of my R5F1 box, and perform a successful upgrade to Knoppmyth 5.5. I want to use apt-get to install logwatch. To prepare, I edited the /etc/apt/sources.list file. I commented out the unstable repository (deb http://ftp.debian.org unstable main contrib non-free) and added "deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian lenny main" since the one stable repository included with Knoppmyth did not include logwatch.

In order to install logwatch, several other packages need to be installed as well. Here is the output of apt-get instal -s logwatch:
Code:
root@rocmythtv:/etc# apt-get install -s logwatch
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  exim4 exim4-base exim4-config exim4-daemon-light libgnutls-dev libgnutls26
Suggested packages:
  mail-reader eximon4 exim4-doc-html exim4-doc-info libmail-spf-query-perl swaks gnutls-doc
  gnutls-bin guile-gnutls fortune-mod
Recommended packages:
  mailx
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  exim4 exim4-base exim4-config exim4-daemon-light logwatch
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libgnutls-dev libgnutls26

My question is, will this damage Knoppmyth and mythtv in any way? Does anyone else have logwatch installed in version 5.5? If so, how did you go about this without any unintended negative consequences?

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,

My guess would be "probably not". When apt-getting, the danger signs are anything that will be removed (of which you have 0) and anything obviously important being upgraded (e.g. the kernel, or glibc).

You seem to be OK. Removals are the most dangerous, from experience.

Good luck

Mike
