How can I kill x so that I can install the nvidia drivers. I am downloading them from nvidia because the pacman install makes my system unbootable. I have flysprayed this but am trying different things to see if I can isolate the issue.

I cannot install any version newer than 0.5 a pacman Syu leaves me with no X

init 3 does not work
telinit 3 does not work
What is the secret incantation for linhes?

Thanks
Craig

To stop X:
Code:
sv stop frontend
killall xinit

To start again:
Code:
sv start frontend

What nVidia card do you have? Please make sure it's supported and you don't need an older version of the nVidia drivers.

8400gs

I did have it working with an 0.5 install upgraded to vdpau.

0.7 install would not work but an 0.5 upgraded to 0.7 worked

now an upgrade from 0.5 to 0.8 fails

installing just the nvidia drivers via pacman leaves me no X

So I will try just the drivers from Nvidia.

Thanks for the help

Craig

Take a look at your xorg.conf. That's most likely where the problem lies.

Also, you might want to try nVidia 180.60 (the current pre-release) from their web site. Maybe something is broken for your board in 180.51.

I have an 8400GS and it works fine, installed via pacman and no problems. I too suspect the problem may be in xorg.conf

Alright

I installed 0.5
installed gcc
installed make
downloaded .51 driver package from nvidia and installed

Reboot

All is well

Pacman -Syu

upgrade proceedes normally (I always get one package coming up as corrupted, I say yes to delete, rerun, and all is good)

Reboot
No X (hangs @ restoring alsa levels)

Xorg file is very basic and the same a what worked before upgrade.

Change nvidia to vesa

Reboot

No X hangs right after it restores alsa levels something about pcspeaker using guess method to initialize (Fail)

That box is hooked up to a tv so reading text is tough.

Any suggestions.

Why are you not using the provided packages? They are version 180.51.

Code:
pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils

Also, post your "pacman -Syu" output. Something during that process seems to be the issue.

I have tried the provided packages and had no success so I thought I would try direct from nvidia.

I will do a reinstall because I don't get far enough in the boot process to get ssh access now.

Probably going to be a day or so before I get time to play again.

Thanks

Ok fresh install of 0.5

nvidia working all is good here goes my upgrade attempt.

Did sv stop frontend/killall xinit

Code:
[root@trev ~]# pacman -Syu

Proceed with installation? [Y/n]

Naturally I answer yes

and so it begins :)

Code:
:: Retrieving packages from core-testing...

Of note the libmng package always shows as corrupted, if I choose no to delete then nothing happens if I choose yes then I get an error I run pacman -Syu again and it downloads libmng and does the upgrade.

Code:
:: File libmng-1.0.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz is corrupted. Do you want to delete it? [Y/n] y
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
libmng-1.0.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz is invalid or corrupted
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
[root@trev ~]#

So we try again

Code:
[root@trev ~]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
 core-testing is up to date
 extra-testing is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
:: Replace esd with core-testing/esound? [Y/n] y

Download again and we get an error saying all packages exist.

Code:

[root@trev ~]#

Lets try just installing libmng

Code:
[root@trev ~]# pacman -S libmng
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...

Targets (1): libmng-1.0.10-1

Total Download Size:    0.00 MB

[root@trev ~]#

Because this post is getting long I will edit a little

I run pacman -Syu again and get

Code:
Total Download Size:    0.52 MB
Total Installed Size:   657.94 MB

Proceed with installation? [Y/n] y
:: Retrieving packages from core-testing...
 iproute-2.6.25-1-i686    444.3K  339.0K/s 00:00:01 [#####################] 100%

error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
/etc/issue exists in both 'LinHES-config' and 'filesystem'

and miles more of package already exists.

I run it again but say no to iproute2 and esound
and the result is the same

how about -Sfu

Runs without error now

some success now for vdpau I should have thought to use force before.
