Post subject:  PVR 250 problems after R4V4.1 Install

Ok i had r4v3installed and running fine without a video capture card. I recently put in a pvr250 in and it worked great right away. I could't get the new tv_grab_na_dd to work after briefly trying to follow some instructions I found somewhere in here, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to r4v4.1. Ever since then I have been having problems.

1st. When I upgraded everything was completly wiped out and nothing worked at all. So i did a fresh auto install.

2nd. After the install everything seemed to work, except I had no audio on live tv(yeah i know a ton of people have this problem)

3rd. I read a bunch of stuff and for reasons i'm still not sure of i switched my video card with a geforce 2 mx200 and did another fresh install. After this I got no video at all, just a black screen, So i put the ati card back in and reinstalled yet again.(this i really don't want a solution for, just thought it was interesting)

4th. After hours of seaching through this forum I found this

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ight=sound

I followed step 12, started up myth, sound worked great.......however, now when live tv is on for something like 20-30 seconds it freezes up. I can exit live TV but when i go back i just get the black screen until i reboot.

I've given up. Should i just go back to R4V2 and try the xmltv thing again? or is there any difference in ivtv in R4V4? and where would i download older versions of knoppmyth from?

One more interesting thing. on my last install, The KnoppMyth button doesn't show up anymore on the main menu. I have to shut it down from another machine.

I know cesman i've read all the other posts and you keep saying recompile ivtv before posting these questions, but there's one thing i keep thinking every time i see that. HOW DO YOU RECOMPILE IVTV? Is there a link with a thread explaining it or somewhere else? cause i've looked everywhere and still haven't been able to figure out how

here's my specs:
amd athlon xp2200
gigabyte GA-7VRX(via chipset)
512MB pc2700
PVR 250 rev110
seagate 120GB 7200rpm
ATI AIW Radeon 7500 w Grandtech Ultimate Wireless Scanbox
ATI Remote
Lynksys eathernet card
400 watt power supply

ok so i finally recompiled ivtv after hours of searching the forum. That didnt work, I still get a black screen. And now after reinstalling about 15 times i still get a black screen. I used to get a picture with no sound. If i hit ctrl+alt+f1 i get a message that says

"ivtv: Timeout waiting for data!"

I've tried every pci slot and nothing helped, the last slot actually caused my keyboard and mouse to not work. I've read about the problem with the via chipsets but the thing is this card used to work when i had R4V3 installed. I tried installing that again and all i get is a black screen now. I tested it, the card works fine in windows. Anyone possibly have any clue whats wrong?

so if the problem is the via chipset why would it have worked fine before. Are there updates anyone knows of.

If i have to get a new one, what would be a CHEAP motherboard to get that is known to have no errors.

And just one more thing i'm wondering, does anyone have a gigabyte GA-7VRX and pvr 250 thats working?

I'm having the same problem. I recompiled the msp3500.o, got sound with my pvr 250, video from my nvidia card.
Unfortunately, after a couple of minutes, the video freezes--actually, 50% of the time the box freezes. I've never had that happen before with a Linux box.

One of the problems with knoppmyth (is also the benefit), the install is pretty automated, so I'm unsure of what went right and what went wrong.

I looked in the /var/log/mythtv/mythtvbackend.log and I see no smoking gun, though I do see errors about null files and something to do with /.qt--I'll have to get verbatim when I get home to the box.

I had seen problems with waiting for pending DMA issues. I turned off DMA on my drive, but the picture got jerky. WHen I turn DMA back on, I get the freeze problem. I also have a VIA chip set--is that the problem?

If you have a k?133/266 based via chipset and are trying to use a pvr?50 card then DMA is the problem. There is a DMA bug in the via chipsets, and unfortunately there is no workaround that I am aware of.

Thanks for a good answer. Unfortunately, i t appears that turning the DMA off is not acceptable (stuttering).
Well, that's not good news, but it is good to know. I guess I need to find a replacement micro-atx board that is not using VIA chip set.
Any other chip sets to steer clear of?

It has the VIA KM400--is it all VIA chip sets that have a DMA bug working with the PVR-250?
