Which drivers should I install for my Optiarc AD-7170 DVD writer? I have found drivers for Optiarc AD-7170 S-ATA and for P-ATA. Which one should I chooses? What is the difference? I've looked at the properties for my DVD writer but I can't find S-ATA or P-ATA anywhere, just the AD 7170A.

without knowing the hardware you are talking about, if it is PATA/IDE it will have a long cable connector (roughtly the length of your finger), if it is SATA it will have a much smaller connector with shaped like an 'L".

Hope this helps,

Nathan

Does your DVD writer not work at present?

I have to say, a little more information would help. Did you use it to install KnoppMyth/LinHES? If so, it actually does work and drivers are not needed.

If there are other symptoms, such as you can't get it to read media, such as commercial DVD's, you are actually asking a different question and the solution is much different.

However, if it is a replacement for a dead drive you have swapped out, you may have to get it to redetect the hardware (???) and if this is the case I'm sure someone with more linux experience can point you in the right direction.

That's a PATA (Parallel ATA) drive according to a quick search. nmcaullay's suggestion was good as well. So to verify the drive type, look at the back panel and see if it's connected with a wide parallel ribbon cable or a narrow Serial ATA cable.

Oh and you shouldn't need to load any drivers. It should be recognized out of the box as a standard CD/DVD burner.
