[My previous post just vanished (maybe I forgot to hit submit) so I'm re-sending.]

I'm trying a fresh install of Knoppmyth on new hardware and keep getting stuck at 80% (Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer). I succeeded in installing 5.5 on the same hardware so I know it's not completely hopeless. I have:

Gigabyte X48-DS5 MB with Intel Quad Core 2.66MHZ
4MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX
PVR 250
PVR 150
HDHomerun (on network)
WD 1TB SATA HD
Seagate 250GB PATA HD
Samsung 500GB PATA HD

I've tried various suggestions from the net such as noapic, acpi=on, acpi=force, acpi=off, all to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm past the point of no return (<3 days, 2 of which are workdays, until family returns) so I'm going with the 5.5 install for now, but I'd like to move up to R6 if possible.

Thanks.

It gets stuck booting from the CD or on the reboot after it's installed?

It gets stuck on the livecd, so it never installs.

Things to try in any order or all together:
1) add load_modules=off to the kernel line
2) debug-> boot to console
3) add nomce to kernel line.

Certainly try without bootsplash it will be easier to see whats going on.
Also see if you can switch to another console with alt+f3

Try choosing to force vesa install.
If that works it may be similar to an issue I had.

Have you checked the obvious?
Verified the burned CD you're using is good?
Checked he md5sum of the iso you downloaded?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Here's my combined reply:

tophee, yes I checked the md5 and the cd and even reburned it just in case.

jams, I did boot without the splash and saw the same errors: starting mysql fails and hald locks at busy. When this happens the keyboard goes completely unresponsive so I can't go to a console or otherwise troubleshoot.

I will try jams and iscraigh's suggestions the next time I get a long window of opportunity and try to upgrade. The WAF is returning to town tomorrow and I don't feel like being beaten to death if the TV isn't working :)

On a side note, I had a minor hardware hiccup in 5.5 that may or may not have affected R6: my pvr 150 was detected by 5.5 but didn't function because apparently it wasn't perfectly seated. When I get a chance I'll try to boot the R6 cd again to see if that little problem was causing hald to hang. Thanks again for the advice!

DoomedTX - I had nothing but failures trying to install R6 for 3 days. Went through 3 CD burns, 3 hard drives and was about to give up. Then for the heck of it I tried another optical drive and it never failed after that. No reasoning why since the drive would read every other disc I put in it but it would not work with the R6 ISO.
