Now, i dont which of these is to blame, but i'll list them out to see if anyone can push me in the right direction...

In the last week or so, 2 things have happened
1) I have upgraded using pacman, with it came amongst other things a new mythtv, probably linuxtv drivers.
2) Rain and cloudy weather. I've been using KM for years, and weve had winter before

What i'm getting now is quite frequent blocky reception on recordings/tv, and some popping noise in the audio.

I have tried the following
1) changing between my PCI DVB-T cards
2) changing the aerial inputs on the cards
3) rescanning on different cards
4) using vdpau instead

I am going to try the following
1) get better quality flyleads from the f-type connector cable to the back of the PCI-cards
2) wait for better weather
3) check the antenna on the roof, and connections
4) any other ideas

A couple of questions
1) Is there any way to go back to a previous version of mythtv to see if that is the problem?

Cheers,

Nathan

Code:
pacman -U /data/var/cache/pacman/pkg/mythtv-0.21-
Then tab to see what packages you have previously downloaded.

I doubt that it is mythtv though. I think it is more likely that it is the v4l-dvb drivers.

Thanks Britney,

A very useful bit of information to have...

I am looking at the previous packages, but there is nothing that looks like v4l-dvb. I'm guessing you are right with this being the cuulprit.

Does anyone know how v4l-dvb is packaged up? I can't see anything that looks like it?

Cheers,

Nathan

hmm, interesting....

I dont seem to have any v4l-dvb history in my pacman.log, but there is v4l-dvb in the repos
http://knoppmyth.net/repo/i686/core-testing/

I assume I have v4l-dvb installed, otherwise my DVB cards would never have worked?

Any clues on how to detect what v4l-dvb is installed in R6?

Cheers,

NAthan

I think if you don't have v4l-dvb installed then the dvb drivers that are being used are the ones that are included in the 2.6.28 kernel. Only other thing I can think of is if the dvb-firmware got updated and could be causing the issue. Otherwise it could very well be a reception issue as you mentioned before.

Yep, seems i have the base delivered v4l-dvb, so my next place to look is the dvb-firmware... which was updated recently according to pacman.log

Code:
[2009-07-04 19:53] upgraded dvb-firmware (1-3 -> 1-5)

I dont have dvb-firmware 1.3 in the package cache, is there an easy way to revert to it from 1.5?

Btw, thanks for helping out on this one...

Cheers,

Nathan

Nathan,

Am I missing where you mentioned which card you're using?

Does anyone know an easy way to test dvb-t streams outside of mythtv. Just incase i can isolate to to mythtv introducing the problem?

Also, could anyone shed some light as to why the following files appear to have been updated on the 2nd Juny 2009? The pacman log shows now activity on that date?

/lib/modules/2.6.28-LinHES/kernel/drivers/media/video/saa7134/

dvb-apps contains dvbscan, which you can use from the command line.

The mythtv wiki entry is at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Dvb_Apps

The downloads are at http://www.linuxtv.org/downloads/

Regards

Mike

Seems after upgrading my R6 in early july, I am unable to get a decent reception (stuttering, audio pops) from any channel on DVB-T.

My only thought at this point is that dvb-firmware was updated during a pacman from 1-3 to 1-5. It seems that 1-3 was in stock R6, so it isnt in my cache. Is there any way to get dvb-firmware 1-3, to see if that is the problem?

It is quite strange (and disapointing) that I cant get back reception on PCI cards that have been fine for years...

I have ordered a dvb hdhomerun. This is a perfect excuse, as i've been interested in this kit since it became available. Hopefully, the reception is better on this device than my PCI cards.

Nathan

Interesting, you NoR or SoR? I've been using the Dvico cards for years now (got a + and a DF4) and I'm running R6. Reception has been really good since I pointed my aerial in the right direction.

I just used my laptop (Ubuntu + Mythfrontend) and changed channels whilst moving the aerial around till I got the best signal. Prior to that it had been close to ok, did update R6 and it degraded, but now it's better then it ever was. I get above 70% on all channels and close to 90% on some on a good day.

Probably said CMD line tools could have done it, but I never got motivated enough to try them.
