Post subject:  Pre-installation questions

Hi, I have some questions about the hardware I'm going to be using when I install KnoppMyth. I did a linux install years and years ago, and haven't really kept up, so I'm sort-of, but not really a linux newbie.

But here's my situation now: I recently had a motherboard go bad on me after two years of service. I decided to upgrade the Mobo, processor, ram, and optical drives, which means that I now have the following hardware that I can put in a new box:

Tekram CD-390OU2b/w SCSI card
Pioneer SCSI DVD-ROM
Plextor SCSI CD-RW
AMD Athlon XP 2100
1 Gig Mushkin CL2 PC2100 DDR ram.
30GB Maxtor UDMA/66 7200RPM drive with 2mb cache
Hauppauge WinTV 401 TV/FM card

I'm going to be putting all that with an CHAINTECH "7NIF2" nForce2 Mobo, 'cause that got a good review in the KnoppMyth Wiki for being easy to set up. I also like that it has TV-out right on the board.

Now, I'm a little concerned about the Hauppauge not having hardware encoding. I'm thinking of buying a 250 MCE card, but I'd like to keep that cash if I could, since I could buy a new 20" TV (right now all I have is a 13" Television.) What do you guys think about Myth's software encoding? Would it really be worthwhile to get a card with hardware encoding, and if so, is there another card as good as those made by hauppauge?

Is there anything else that raises some alarm bells? How about that hard drive? Oh, and is there a USB remote control that works well with KnoppMyth (preferably out of the box?)

well the hard drive is rather small, but the speed should be fine.

As for the usb remote. the only one that I know of that works "out of the box" is the ati remote wonder.

If you are only going to have one tuner you should be fine with a software tuner and that proc. I have AthlonXP 1700+ and have one software and one hardware.
