I'm using knoppmyth, and after what appeared to be a successful install, the front end hangs while loading. During the screen that says, "Pre-scaling theme images," it hangs at 99%, then eventually quits with no error message. Unfortunately, I'm a little new, and don't know where to start!

Any suggestions?

Does the system lock or just MythTV?
What is in the backend log?
If the system doesn't lock, start mythfrontend from an xterm.

If I remember correctly, the scaling does "hang" close to the end, but it is just very non-linear. The reason it didn't give you an error message is because it finished rescaling the images, i.e. no error was encountered. I remember rescaling my images numerous times while configuring the optimum size for my UI and it would take a loooong time at 98 or 99%.

Sorry I wasn't very helpful. I've got a Piv 800mhz with 384MB RAM. It's a Wincast TV Card, and a 17" Monitor. Am I missing more info?

FWIW, I played around with it, and keep getting the error from the backend that it won't bind to the port, but if I shut it down and restart it, it seems to work.

Also, during startup, I see the error fly across the screen, "Apache couldn't detect a fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.0". Could that have something to do with it?

The Apache error is nothing to worry about. The backend log is in /var/log/mythtv/

And that machine is a bit under powered without a tuner card that does hardware encoding. It's certainly very short on disk space... See this link for the CPU requirements:

yeah, I know it's all underpowered, etc. For now, I'm using it to learn, then make a case for getting rid of our DishPVR's (gotta convince the wife)!

Also, I'm not really planning on using this for live tv...I'd like to be able to record shows, then watch later. Will it work ok for this?

You might be able to get something working. I don't know enough about the software decoder CPU load to say what exactly, maybe low res capture, but certainly not enough to be considered a convincing proof of concept.

Using the box to watch live TV is a major selling point. No more missing part of the action because of a phone call, just hit pause and resume when you're ready to. No more waiting for a commercial to go to the bathroom and then missing something because you took too long. No more watching commercials when you don't want to, just pause, do something else for a few minutes and come back a little later to skip it. No more, "what the heck just happened?", just skip backwards and see it again.

I just killed the backend, then restarted it, and it works!!! I'm not sure what's up with the error, but it seems as long as I kill everything then manually restart it, it works.

Watching live tv isn't too bad, even on that low end hardware, however it does look like I have some audio syncing issues, but I can worry about that later! I think I've got it close enough to convince my wife that we need to toss the PVR to the curb.
