Hi, I am having a problem where I cannot seem to get any apt-gets to work. Before a simple apt-get update was not a problem but since following the EPIA M how-to it seems that I can't get any ftp fetchs to work. Also Mythnews and Mythweather have stopped working. I can, however, ping the services successfully. Domain names resolve without a problem, it seems that my install just has a problem actually retrieving data.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?
[edit] even webmin cannot fetch any information about available modules - this used to work without a problem.
[edit2] wget also does not work. This is strange, how can I be able to ping an address but not able to actually connect and retrieve from it?
[edit3] I am fairly sure it is something in the webmin update that broke this - webmin is the last thing that I remember configuring before this problem occured, maybe something in the firewall config, but I have reset all of that...

2 things to throw out...
1) turn off the firewall and see your results.
2) does internet work? could your DHCP be having problems..
These are obvious, however we need to start here..

I am not 100% sure how to turn off the firewall built into linux/webmin but I have turned my hardware firewall off and it made no difference. As I said before pinging an address is not a problem at all - I don't have a web browser installed on the mythbox so I can't tell you if I can browse the interent or not.
DHCP is handled by my hardware router/firewall and it seems to be working fine as I can putty into my mythbox on the IP given out by DHCP. I don't know if the mythbox is doing its own DHCP which conflicts?
I just can't seem to get my head around how ping can work and yet a simple ftp file retreive does not.

Quote: I just can't seem to get my head around how ping can work and yet a simple ftp file retreive does not. well a file request and a ping.. run different protocal.. a ping is icmp. So different rules apply in your iptables. i dont have the experience with iptables to help you out with this one. Im still mostly a m$ boy learning linux. Yes, you do Lynx. While a DHCP server is included w/ KnoppMyth, it isn't turned on my default. What is your boxen's path to the world?

I can access my box on the local network using 192.168.0.3
The structure of my network is as follows
Cable modem --> Netgear Router/Firewall --> Mythbox & XP laptop
I have not started and DHCP on the box so I guess it is turned off.
I can ping urls and they resolve to IP addresses and visa versa, DNS resolution appears to be fine.
How do I get Lynx to work?
Thanks for your help so far.

"man lynx" would be a start.
Just type "lynx " followed by a URL. But frankly if wget doesn't work, I doubt that lynx will.

The only errors I get are timeouts, timeouts in wget, ftp, mythnews & weather etc.
If you can specify an error log that I might need to look in I can post the contents.
I made a knoppmyth backup before I did the Epia How To and webmin upgrade, would it be any use restoring. The Epia How To does some pretty heavy changing and I think it also does a kernel rebuild so maybe a rollback will make the problem worse.
It seems someone else is having the same problem here:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=16852
The only thing in common that we have is we both have via M boards and we both did the via how to on knoppmythwiki.

This is from my linux/.config file, I don't know if it will help - I am clutching at straws here:

Well, I ran into a another little quirk with this problem. When I plug the box directly into my cable modem (bypassing my wireless router) I get all interent functionality back again.
My question is, what on earth could my router be doing to misdirect/block packets? I can plug my XP laptop into the router and have no problems at all. My router has a pretty basic firewall but I cannot see anything that would block requested packets. The IP tables on the mythbox firewall are all clear, I don't think the firewall is even enabled.

There is no firewall by default on KnoppMyth. By plugging the boxen directly into the cable modem, I think it is safe to say the issue is w/ your router/firewall dohicky (technical term).

I sort of agree - except there was not a problem until I started messing with the kernel and webmin and my XP laptop has not problems with the router.
Also - what kind of router problem would allow pings but not actual file retrieving? Maybe I should take the router back to the store and claim it is faulty and try everything with a new one?
At the back of my mind I am still thinking it is a problem with the myth box setup...

Since you don't have a "standard" KnoppMyth installation, you can:
1: Boot off the CD and see if you still have the same issue:
a: If you do, then it is the router.
b: If you don't then it is your configuration.
2: Install onto another hard drive and see if you still have the same issue:
a: If you do, then it is the router.
b: If you don't then it is your configuration.
