Just about to pick a linux flavor for my myth box. Does Knopp support lvm out of the box?

Yes. You need to configure it manually, but the pieces are all in place.

I recommend the instructions on the wiki for this:

LvmHowTo

...and...

AdditionalHarddriveHowTo

Thanks, I looked at them and I can handle that. I am kinda worried about upgrades though.

is there a reason that it is not native?

"Native" is an imprecise term.

In one sense, LVM *is* "native" because it is already installed on your system and ready to configure and turn on. Be ye joyus that LVM is installed on your system and easy to configure, and that people have gone before thee and written instructions for thee to follow.

In another, LVM is not "native" because the default setup of partitions in KnoppMyth didn't install LVM to manage the /myth filesystem. Until recently LVM was not considered all that necessary. This changes with HDTV and its voracious appetite for disk space. A single 250G or 300G drive just doesn't quite cut it when implementing a full-featured Myth box that includes HDTV. LVM is an easy way to span multiple disks for such applications. I anticipate a future version of KnoppMyth may include LVM on at least the /myth filesystem.

Don't worry about the upgrades. I'm fairly newb on Linux and read up as much as I could on it before recently upgrading my R4V4.1 to R4V5 system (that has an LVM volume). I had to patch together advice from many threads to mostly understand it and will be posting a Wiki HowTo on it soon. I didn't really understand it until I did it but the upgrade is very easy. I re-installed R4V5 about 7 or 8 times (for h/w upgrade reasons) and had to do the LVM procedure each time so I really have it down now. Like I said, it's very simple so don't hessitate using LVM because you're afraid of the upgrade.

There's been many requests for cesman to make the myth partition LVM in R5 so who knows...

Looking forward to that wiki HOWTO on upgrading an LVM KnoppMyth setup. I have a general idea of what one would do but would love confirmation before actually doing it!

I finally got to posting the LVM upgrade HOWTO so it's available at http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/index.php?page=KnoppMythUpgradeWithLVM.
