Hey everyone
I just installed knoppmyth. I am a Linux newbie but no stranger to a computer. For some reason Linux fails when I try to obtain an IP address. So I set a static address (or how one web site told me how to set a static address) in /etc/network. I am trying to get knoppmyth to update weather, guides and such before I play with the TV end of it. Any help would be great!

I know thats probally not enough info for a Linux expert but here is some more info I think might be useful ...

When I type ifconfig all I was getting is "lo" information
so I set a static IP on my internal network with the command

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.18 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255

But I still can not ping anything on my network or any internet site

Although I can ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1)
Hope this info helps

well just try running netcardconfig if it tells you it can't find a device then we need to know what NIC you are using so we can figure out what module to tell you to load so the device driver is available.

note that this is not a standard problem, most NIC's are detected fine, but lots of wireless NIC's and some of the very new onboard (generally gigabit) NIC's aren't detected.

Its an onboard NIC from a 1GHZ HP computer. But I also put in a Popular brand D-link and got the same responce so I took it back out. When I typed "netcardconfig" Here's what I got ...

Sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0failed to connect to localhost:bootpc: Operation now in progress.

There might be another pump running!
Operation Failed

When I type ifconfig all I get is "lo" I donno what this is but it is set up to 127.0.0.1 (loopback) I reconfigred this to a static IP on my network. I can ping internal addresses but nothing external. even when I configure eth0 it makes no differnce. The only time I can ping anything is when I reconfigure the lo, but I still can not get out to the internet.

you should NEVER change lo it is your loopback address and you need it just like it is. You need to figure out what module your NIC is supposed to use and load that module then run netcardconfig again. not sure why this didn't happen on install for you, it's supposed to.

Ok thanks for the lo update .... I will reset it. I ran netcardconfig and it do not seem to obtain an ip address. It fails. I keep getting ...

Sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0failed to connect to localhost:bootpc: Operation now in progress.

There might be another pump running!
Operation Failed
Failed

and when I set a static IP that works with my network .... I can ping local addresses and the gateway (which I also set) but no external public addresses or sites. Since I am dealing with an onboard NIC and nothing is working I am starting to think its a compatibly issue with the hardware. I am going to try running mythtv on another version of linux (any suggestions) and if that does not seem to work I am going to try knoppmyth on a new PC.

If you had to use another version I would say FC3 so you could use the guide to install it. But be warned there are several people here who will vouch for the fact that even with the guides it's much more difficult to get working on another distro than knoppmyth.

out of curiosity does your mb have firewire?

Wold downloading a copy of the latest Knoppix help? I'm not sure how close to Knoppix KnoppMyth autodetection is, but if Knoppix boots up correctly and lets you access the net, then you know that all that needs to be done is figure out the module that was loaded for the nic. You may just have an unsupported nic. There seem to be a few new chipsets coming out lately and I find most of my problems iwth Linux is that the hardware is too new.
